For most food lovers, an end-of-the-month cheque or bonus usually means an outing to a favourite restaurant for a treat. Others will be more philanthropic and focus on giving back to the community with their little bit extra. StreetSmart South Africa allows you to do both.
Registered as a non-profit organisation and a public benefit organisation, StreetSmart operates as a conduit fundraising body that distributes these funds to selected beneficiaries. The current beneficiaries are organisations that work with street children and vulnerable youths who are at risk of ending up on the streets. You may have seen participating restaurants display a StreetSmart card on the table, informing you that a voluntary R5 donation can be added to your bill. Diners have the option to tick that box, give more than R5 or not give at all.
It may make a difference to know that every cent raised for StreetSmart in these restaurants goes to the selected beneficiaries in each city, town or area. (All the organisations operational costs are taken care of by corporate sponsorships.) Last year, with just these small donations at restaurants, StreetSmart was able to raise R675 000.
For an easy way of doing your part for your community, take a look at the list below for all the participating restaurants in your town.
