This is a very good restaurnant. Last week I took my teenagers and ordered and shared a Bento box and Tappayaki, which were delicious. The place lacks atmosphere and ambience. The service is friendly but average. The menu is extensive. It is worth a try.

Matsuya might not be the best Japanese restaurant, but it is the only one with such a wide variety of Japanese dishes in South Africa.
Many of the food is actually much better than some of the Japanese food I've tasted elsewhere, like in Randburg.
The waiters weren't always well informed about the dishes, but things have changed since 2011. In any case, nearly everyone has a smartphone these days right? So, go check out Wikipedia to see if you'd like to order Ramen noodles, and you might be pleasantly surprised!

If you want quality sushi, this is the place. If you want quality Japanese food, this is not the place. The decor is tacky, the acoustics are horrible and the service is not that great either. Our waitress couldn’t even recommend a dish, as she was not interested or just not educated.

Sushi and sashimi at Matsuya is always fresh, delicious and attractive. The traditional Japanese fare is also great tasting and the tepenyaki grill a must, especially for large groups. The ambience is good with stylish minimalistic decor. The clientele seem to be mainly Asian, which gives it an authentic feel. The only thing that can improve is the service. Friendly and helpful yes, but not knowledgeable enough about Japanese food or the wine list. And it would be preferred if they are dressed in more traditional Asian clothing, although they are locals. All in all a great experience every time Ive been there. I especially love the private rooms [smoking if you so prefer]!
