I have found Nirvana. It is a Pasteis de Nata from Jason Bakery in Loop Street. My first visit to the newly-opened branch did not disappoint. On recommendation of a friend, I ordered the BLT (to go). And couldn't resist adding a wee Pasteis for later. When I unwrapped the BLT at my desk, I was treated to not one, but TWO little beauties (thick slices of bacon with lettuce and tomato and a delicious sriracha mayo sandwiched between still-warm seed loaf) - for just R45. Generosity in food, especially with food costs going the way they are, is a really beautiful thing. But back to that Pasteis de Nata - this is something that can promise so much, but go so wrong with flabby fillings and undercooked pastry the norm. Not so with this morsel - creamy, vanilla-spiked set custard in a thin, crisp shell. I'll be going back just for those. Oh, and maybe another BLT, or two.
