Mix Cocktail Bar (Rosebank)

The popular Keyes Avenue venue is as much about concept as it is about preparation. For example, there’s the Not an Espresso martini: a combination of Pyrat rum, cold brew coffee, Disaronno, lemon juice, cellulose and chocolate. These are evocative drinks that tell a story. The food on offer includes light bar snacks like biltong, nuts and crackling, and you can also order small plates that will adequately line the stomach, from buffalo wings and Dutch meatballs to pulled pork sliders and fish and chips.

Mootee Bar (Melville)

Mootee Bar prides itself on telling unconventional stories of modern Africa through its offering, hence it’s not surprising that each drink of its drinks serves is a narrative. There are bottled cocktails, such as the delightfully named Koeksister Negroni, with flavours of rooibos, vanilla and butter, and Oom Paul, a spicy and aromatic concoction. Then there are cocktail drops: if you enjoy bold flavour, try the Malay Margarita, which has hints of agave, chilli and coriander. The Indo Colada also comes highly recommended, with flavours of molasses, coconut and allspice. It would be remiss not to try their take on pap en vleis or the gatsby – proudly South African dishes made with a twist that shows the dynamism of local food culture.

Saigon Suzy (Parkwood)

This Asian-inspired barbeque bar has a rock n roll twist complete with the three private karaoke pads. Here, guests can sing, eat and drink like rock stars. The food is served in a street-style manner and has everything from Japanese to Vietnamese influences. Try the Saigon tasting menu, a lip-smacking offering of Thai beef mince lettuce wraps, pho a fresh pineapple sundae. But, most importantly, you’ll want to have a few of intriguing cocktails. The Hanoi Hannah is a mix of Bombay Sapphire gin, sake, yuzu, pineapple and vanilla frozen slushy.

Sin + Tax (Rosebank)

Owned by multi-award-winning mixologist Julian Short, this cocktail bar is one of Joburg’s finest. Showcasing finesse and boasting local flavours, each cocktail makes for a unique flavour experience. For example, the Bee’s Knees is a smorgasbord of local tastes with its mix of buchu-infused Wixworth gin, acacia honey and lemon juice; while the Paradigm Shift cocktail features Cape Brandy Oude Molen VSOP comes together with apple tart syrup, fresh apricot, lemon and caperitif to produce fruity and fragrant tastes evocative of summer in South Africa. Bar snacks in the form of olives, mixed nuts and biltong are also on offer. For something that sticks to the ribs, order a traditional Neapolitan pizza from next-door Coalition’s menu.

Six Cocktail Bar (Melville)

The trendy hot spot describes itself as the home to Jozi’s best cocktails. The proof’s in the drinking, and with a seemingly endless list of mouthwatering cocktails from which to choose, it’s hard to dispute this assertion. Constantly finessing its offering, SIX designs new cocktails each year. This year’s theme celebrates its 16thbirthday, with cocktails that have names of classic songs and movies. After a Weekend Special (a mix of vodka and thyme-and-citrus flavours) and Six in the City (Remy Martin VSOP, Cointreau and a dash of cherry topped with sparkling wine), you’d be excused for going AWOL with the Absent Without Leave, a heady mix of herbal absinthe with cloudy apple and lemonade. To line the stomach, there are pizzas, tapas and seafood, plus Mexican and meaty platters.
