SA’s first Michelin-starred chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, was in town this month for the Cape Town leg of the Good Food and Wine Show. We sat down with the chef, whose restaurant, Jan, in Nice, France, won a star last year, to find out if he’d rather give up cheese or carbs, get drunk on tequila or gin, and whether – in the event he ever came back to South Africa – he would open a restaurant in Bree Street or Maboneng.
