South African-based Taste Holdings – the group responsible for bringing Dominos Pizza to our shores – today announced its partnership with Starbucks Coffee Company, revealing plans to open its first South African branch in 2016.
This licensed partnership means that local coffee lovers can soon look forward to tasting the entire Starbucks range of food and beverages. But Joburgers will be first.
“We’re looking forward to bringing the entire Starbucks experience to South Africa for the first time. That includes 100% ethically sourced Arabica coffee, the full Starbucks menu offering and, of course, beautiful coffee houses,” says Carlo Gonzaga, CEO of Taste Holdings.
The first store will open in Johannesburg in the first half of 2016, with more locations to follow.
Don’t worry south africa it’s nothing to get excited about. Not the best coffee at all. The brand is big but just like mcdonalds taste is not what they are selling
Agreed. Coffee culture already strong here in SA. Might get the cold shoulder?
Also don’t know what the fuss is about. My husband refuses to drink coffee anywhere other than Starbucks when we travel. In the last 3 weeks we have visited Starbucks over 15 times and I will be happy to never go there again. I guess there will be long queues like at Burger King just because it is a big brand.
I thought Eat-Out was in support of small, artisan business. This corporate giant will do to small coffee businesses what Walmart (Massmart: Builders Warehouse) has done to small hardware businesses: wipe-out. Also, no price benefits to local customers… I am very disappointed!
Eew yay let’s support massive international corporations with no value around health or taste – just sugar and chemical laden flavorants at exorbitant prices
Susan, just to point this out, Eat Out in no way said they were supporting the Starbucks chain, they are simply breaking the news that they’re coming to SA. No need to be disappointed
Been to them overseas, they are very expensive and average products so I won’t be going there.
Not sure about Starbucks. One thing South Africa has grown to be in serving coffee is shown through the different touch each artisian coffee shop gives. Now coming to Starbucks I’m not really moved will still keep exploring the different cafés for a unique experience not a franchised american experience.
The name is huge. I’ve visited them all over Europe, for the free wifi. It’s not the greatest by a long shot, my Nespresso gives me a better brew. Hope they offer free wifi.
Why no Starbucks in Cape Town?
