Despite the overwhelmingly turbulent times that the restaurant industry has faced, “Overture has survived and thrived for 15 years,” says chef and owner Bertus Basson. “We celebrated many successes, worked hard, shed tears, survived COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, and baked thousands of soufflés.” The restaurant was named number 12 in Eat Out’s top 20 restaurants for 2019 with Bertus also winning the coveted S.Pellegrino Chef of The Year Award.
WATCH what fellow chef, Luke Dale Roberts, says about Bertus’s contribution to the South African restaurant industry:
Bertus says the closure of the much-loved restaurant is due to the new owners of Hidden Valley wanting to steer the property in a different direction.
“Overture was my first restaurant. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that from that first service on 1 November 2007 with a tiny kitchen and handful of staff, seven more restaurants would be born, or that some great culinary talents would start their careers in this space. Neither could I imagine that so many of you, our loyal patrons, would pass through our doors and keep returning for more. Our gratitude to you is unending,” he says.

It’s not all doom and gloom, as the Bassons have exciting plans for the future that Eat Out will be able to share in due course.
“Every dark cloud has a silver lining, and in this case, the silver lining is shining bright. This is not goodbye but see you later. Onwards and upwards!” says Bertus.

We moeten dus daar ga eten?
I went there with my friend, who sadly passed on the 2nd of April. This place will always be special to me because it’s where we had our first wine tasting together ❤️
One of our favourite places. Stunning views, excellent food, great memories…..Bertus we will miss Overture, but see you around. Jan, Tilana, Margo and Albert

Loved Overture. We a family of 3 and all of us always asks a lunch at Overture as present. My favorite was the souffle with speculaasherbs
The beef tallow candles!😊
It is where my brother started his career as a chef. It was my first experience with fine dining and it blew me away. The souffle was my favorite dish.
we had lunch and dinner more than a dozen times. And every time the food was exceptional and the service really made us feel “at home”. We are so sad that our favorite restaurant and service team closes down.
OVERTURE is a household name throughout South Africa! Whether you live in Nelspruit, Lichtenburg or the Cape, OVERTURE was the place to enjoy the BEST soufflés! Wishing Bertus Basson and his family HUGE SUCCESS FOR THE FUTURE!!!
