Doughnut overlord Krispy Kreme has announced plans to open a second store at the Sandton Gautrain Station on Wednesday 24 February 2016.
“We chose this West Street location for its high volumes of foot traffic and for its positioning as a transport hub and gateway to one of Africa’s biggest economies,” says Krispy Kreme CEO, Gerry Thomas.
The first store at The Zone in Rosebank opened last year to absurd queues – and from the looks of things, the Gautrain branch will see similar fanfare.
A ribbon cutting with prizes up for grabs is planned, with the first hundred customers in the queue to receive t-shirts and stand a chance to win doughnuts for six or twelve months. The die-hard fans who elbow their way to positions one, two and three will receive a dozen of Krispy Kreme’s decadent Original Glazed® doughnuts every week for a year, six months and three months respectively.
The brand plans to open at least six more stores before the end of 2016 in Gauteng, with a long-term plan for 31 outlets across the country over the next five years.
The big question remains: will Gautrain relax its strict no-eating policy on trains?
When is opening day, and what time? 🙂
Dear Katharine Jacobs,
Hopefully the Gautrain will never relax its strict no-eating policy on trains to ensure we can continue to travel on a clean train.
Steven I am inclined to agree. Apart from anything else, riding alongside someone eating doughnuts would be torture. (Especially if I didn’t have any doughnuts.)
