Joburg is stepping up its buffet game. Be prepared to eat as much as you can, from chowing on crocodile meat to dining like you’re in the Middle Ages.
For a mouth-watering experience of game meats like zebra, kudu, impala and crocodile, you can head to this indulgent carnivorous restaurant in Muldersdrift. If you’re feeling a little less adventurous, you could also opt for chicken, beef or pork. All the meats are grilled in a fire pit in full view of the patrons before being served at the tables on a sword. They serve a soup of the day and honey breads as starters, while desserts include malva pudding, cheesecake, fruit salad, chocolate mousse and ice cream with chocolate syrup. The feasts are available every day of the week for R295 per person (R160 for children under the age of 12). Bookings are essential.

Greensleeves offers a quintessential medieval feast so you can savour meals in the style that the elite enjoyed centuries ago. Look forward to the famous Friars Sunday carvery buffet on the last Sunday of every month, with live music for R250 per person (R125 for children 10 and under). Highlights from the feast include pottage and manchet bread, roast sirloin beef stuffed with spinach and feta, roast porchetta pork shoulder with caramelised guavas, and traditional roast potatoes. If you’re in the mood for authentic Indian food then Shani Khana will fill your belly with a value-for-money curry buffet. For starters, you can dig into over 12 different vegetarian dishes, fried chicken and fish. For mains they offer two chicken, one lamb and five vegetarian curries that range in spice intensity. Dessert comprises a choice between fruit salad, traditional Indian soji, vermicelli, rice pudding and ice cream. All this is available for R90 per person and the buffet runs on Tuesday and Saturday nights from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. It’s run on a first-come-first-served basis and a booking is required if you’re a party of more than two.
