Whatever the weather, burgers are always a tantalising prospect. Craving a juicy meat or veggie patty wedged inside a soft, freshly baked bun and garnished with crazy delicious ingredients? Here are 10 great burger spots in Joburg for your next fix.
The Big Mouth Sushi & Grill (Sandton)
The name says it all: come with a big appetite. The Big Mouth is popular for its sushi offering, but a lesser-known secret is that they make a solid burger. The hamburger drips with deliciousness thanks to plenty of pickles, grilled onions and a saucy barbecue-basted ground beef patty. It comes with an enamel cup filled with thick fries that are perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. An extra R10 gets you a healthy helping of cheddar cheese.

BGR Burger Restaurant (Rosebank)
With a focus on burgers, this Keyes Avenue spot prides itself on its handmade patties, melt-in-your-mouth buns and smoky homemade barbecue sauce. While the burger options may seem sparse, the point is to build your own burger – whether starting with just a simple beef, chicken or vegetarian burger – then adding the toppings of your choice for free. Fries come at an additional cost.
Craft (Parkhurst)
Craft, as the name suggests, is intent on celebrating the craftsmanship of food – whether it’s street food, wood-fired pizza or hearty steaks and pastas. It’s no surprise, then, that the burgers here are particularly well-loved. Made with hand-pressed beef patties and served with the best available seasonal toppings, there’s art to every burger. While the beef, lamb, pulled pork and various vegetable burgers stand out, the sriracha tuna burger – a 200g hand-pressed seared and shredded sriracha tuna patty topped with apple slaw and served on a bed of greens – really turns up the heat.
Dukes (Greenside and Melville) ?
Dukes has long been gourmet-burger heaven, with astonishingly creative flavour combinations to suit meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. From the arguably peerless homemade buns to the handcut chips and original sauces, it’s not hard to see why this is a burger paradise. Try the flagship beef burger, The Dukes, which comes with a beef patty and tomato relish topped with melted cheddar cheese, grilled pineapple, mushrooms, crispy bacon, deep-fried crumbed tomato, a sunny-side egg, homemade gherkins and a topping of onion rings.

Fresh Earth Café & Restaurant (Emmarentia)
There are plenty of options for the conscious eater at Fresh Earth, whether you’re banting, vegan, vegetarian or gluten-intolerant. The Mighty Burger – is a homemade vegetable patty on a whole-wheat bun with hummus, shredded lettuce, tomato and sautéed mushroom – is a tasty, comforting and filling popular favourite. Burgers come with chips.

Jackson’s Real Food Market (Fourways)
Known for its super healthy offering, Jackson’s is where you go for the pleasure of a hamburger with far less post-consumption guilt. The beef burgers are made with 100% grass-fed beef, and the bunless vegan burger is likely the healthiest of the lot. Choose between a grass-fed burger, a chipotle chicken burger or a Beyond Meat vegan option, all topped with melted cheddar or vegan cheddar cheese. All burgers are served with fries cooked in beef tallow.
Sumting Fresh (Norwood)
This Grant Street restaurant began as a food truck that gained such popularity for its gourmet street food that it was simply no longer enough to only access it at the Neighbourgoods Market or Fourways Farmers’ Market. Lip-smacking fried chicken in different iterations remains the main draw card, but the pork bao bun also vies for legendary status.
