Alright, bagels, you have our attention.
Likely tired of being perceived as the boring, paler cousin to the obnoxiously on-trend doughnut, bagels have made a comeback in the best way possible: Oreo-flavoured, slathered in Oreo cream cheese and stuffed with, yes, even more Oreos.
A challenge had clearly been issued by doughnuts, which have recently been paired with wine, eaten as burgers, and teetered on toothpicks atop milkshakes. The call to action was accepted by The Bagel Nook in New Jersey with the result of the Oreo Overload, a bagel that has gone viral with its Instagram-worthy marbled interior, layered with everyone’s favourite cookie and an exorbitant amount of cream cheese.
While the Oreo Overload certainly seems to be The Bagel Nook’s pièce de résistance, it definitely isn’t their only bagel feat. The entire store is dedicated to the fluffy baked pastry, with flavours like chocolate chip, rainbow, blueberry and French Toast, and several made with popular cereals. As if that choice weren’t difficult enough, the selection of cream cheeses is even more varied, with flavours such as birthday cake, cotton candy, fudge brownie, Nutella and cookie dough. Oh, and then you can pick from a dedicated bar of toppings to wedge inside, with options ranging from fresh strawberries to chocolate-chip cookies. The possibilities are endless.
Clearly bagels have proven themselves worthy of more than breakfast – perhaps it’s time our local bagels started getting a little competitive too? Your move, bakers.
