Breakfast is too good and too varied to be enjoyed during only certain hours of the day. Here’s where you can find all the best all-day breakfasts in Joburg.
Here you’ll find aromatic South Indian delicacies. Annapurni is a vegetarian restaurant with a vast array of vegan and gluten-free options. They serve their breakfast dosa all day and all night: delicate pancakes prepared from a combination of rice, semolina and lentil batters served with scrumptious fillings and accompaniments.
Retro décor, a sunny courtyard and a welcoming array of affordable and homely breakfast offerings make this a favourite for locals. The all-day breakfast selection is short but delicious: the famous baked eggs Mirza in a smokey aubergine-and-tomato sauce served with a minty drizzle; heuvos rancheros; and the meneer monsieur – two slices of toasted homemade bread (which is to die for) topped with ham, egg and a mustard sauce.

Lexi’s is the conscious and eco-friendly restaurant that’s all about plants, making vegan, vegetarian, banting and paleo funky and delicious. The smoothie breakfast bowls here are pretty as a picture and seriously delectable; the polenta breakfast stack with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach and seed dukkha is a savoury delight; and the farmer’s breakfast bowl with tofu scramble, grilled mushrooms, roast potatoes, cherry tomatoes, avo, vegan hollandaise and sumac is a vegan’s breakfast heaven.

Local Grill by night and Local Kitchen by day, this restaurant’s weekend all-day breakfasts offer up a homely and rich selection of breakfasts. There’s an array of traditional and eclectic eggs Benedict, plus an assortment of lighter options like poached eggs with Parma ham and asparagus, avo toast with poached eggs, and scrambled eggs with feta and chives.

There are mouth-watering items on the menu here, including the falafel brekko: homemade baked falafels and poached eggs served atop cardamom yoghurt and harissa roasted tomatoes; gluten-free pumpkin flapjacks with berries, banana and coconut cream; and a gorgeous assortment of breakfast bowls like the mango-and-coconut bowl topped with mixed berries, chia seeds, naked muesli, toasted coconut shavings and seasonal fruit. Do note that breakfast is only served all day long on the weekends.

Who ever said what’s yours is mine, has never attempted to share our #Naked Pumpkin Flapjacks.
Pablo is the ‘any time is breakfast time’ spot, serving you breakfast from 6.30am to 4pm daily. Signatures include the green and red shakshukas served with fattoush salad, hummus and Yemen flatbread; the wonderfully wacky topped English muffins (think crispy fried eggs, smoked salmon and crème fraîche); and their Lindt-, KitKat- and peanut-brittle-dusted pancakes. Boozy brunchers can indulge in a wonderful selection of Bloody Marys and cocktails.

All-day breakfast is exactly what this spot is here for. The menu is divided into four sections: the ‘baker’s dozen’ (croissant and Benedict breakfasts); conscious (vegan and gluten-free bowls); ‘O.T.T’ (indulgent and piled high); and ‘all day’ (upscale classic breakfasts). The breakfast quarter pounder is fantastic – a seeded milk bun with a beef-and-lamb patty, aged cheddar, fried egg, smoky bacon and sweet tomato confiture. The avocado toast is a great option if you’re looking for something light. Otherwise for for non-traditional shakshuka with chilli con carne, jalapeños, parmesan and poached eggs, or the halloumi bomb: a tower of ciabatta, halloumi, bacon, spinach, mushrooms and a poached egg.

Situated in Juta Street, this is a delightfully quirky spot. The menu is hand-written on blackboards and offers a range of all-day breakfast items such as salmon trout served with scrambled eggs, capers, cream cheese and rocket; the bifteki breakfast with scrambled eggs, a burger patty, relish and rocket; and the grilled chickpea breakfast with two fried eggs, onions, tomato, rocket and pesto. There’s also great coffee, a great vibe and great music on vinyl.
Though perhaps not quite all-day, Joburg’s latest oyster bar does a great Sunday brunch between 10.30am and 2pm. R350 gets you a main brunch meal, unlimited flapjacks and bottomless cocktails (mimosas, bloody Marys, sangria lemonade and a naughty brunch punch). Plus they have a R15 fresh oyster special. You can also order single items from the brunch menu. Go for the English breakfast comprising a Yorkshire pud, fried egg, bacon, tomato and baked beans, or the Benedict with poached egg, ham and mustard sauce. Or just opt for good old oysters and champagne.
Brunch is the name of the game here and they do it the dim sum way. The pork, duck and vegetable steamed buns are just the ticket and the gau (steamed translucent rice pastries stuffed with prawn, salmon, butternut, or crab and cream cheese, dipped in a traditional vinegar-soy sauce) are just scrumptious. Also great are the deep-fried spicy duck triangles and the lamb gyoza.

This shop is where the tashas name was first established. On the breakfast menu, the Mariachi will blow you away: a toasted tortilla is served with scrambled egg, fresh chili, tomato, avo, coriander, parmesan and lime. The Greek flatbread with feta, origanum, Italian sausage, streaky bacon, scrambled egg, napolitana and rocket is a dream come true.
This Tashas serves breakfast morning, noon and night. Favourites include the breakfast royale: two poached eggs, asparagus or spinach, lemon sauce and seeded bread; the Mexican bowl; and half a paw-paw filled with thick and creamy yoghurt, chopped almonds and honey.

This sunny little spot on 4th avenue serves up all-day breakfasts and the most insane sweet and savoury waffles. The hangover cure waffle comes topped with chorizo, caramelised onions, mozzarella cheese, roasted rosa tomatoes and a fried egg. The French toast waffles with mixed berry compote and crème fraîche are also favourites. Also delicious? The flatbreads, as well as the banana bread with chai-spiced butter and bananas.

This is the breakfast and brunch spot on weekends in Linden, so it’s always jam-packed and they don’t take bookings. The wonderful selection of eclectic sweet and savoury all-day breakfasts is worth the wait, though. Sweet-potato toast is topped with creamy peanut butter, sliced banana, almond flakes, blueberries and luxury granola. Then there’s the zesty smashed avo, pickled red onion and a buttery soft fried egg on seeded health toast. Or go all in with the Scotch egg and salmon sandwich. The Whippet also has a great selection of brunch cocktails, juices and fantastic coffee.
