Where to get tasty tacos and brilliant burritos in Jozi

Mexico City is more than 14 500 kilometres away from Johannesburg, but thankfully you do not have to travel that far for a scrumptious take-away burrito or taco, unless you really want those air miles.

Mama Mexicana (Maboneng)

As part of the vibey Maboneng district in downtown Joburg, this Mexican eatery delicately balances South Africanisms with deep, Mexican flavours, especially in their spicy fish tacos and irresistible pulled pork tacos. As Joburg is a cosmopolitan world city, Mama Mexicana is one of few Mexican outlets to serve a vegetarian burrito that has you not craving the meatier options such as chicken and beef. Their masterpiece burrito is the Chilli Burger, which includes a beef patty topped with their secret Hot Mama sauce and coriander, for good measure.

The tacos range from R95 to R135, while the burritos start at R95 and the most expensive one (Jumbo burrito) costs R120.

Don Pablos Mexican Cantina (Glenanda)

If you are after the most immersive Mexican experience in Gauteng, look no further than Don Pablos. From street festivals that include the community to themed parties and fancy dress events, this is your place.

Sombrero-wearing staff serve well-seasoned chicken, vegetarian and beef tacos, but the real stars of the show are the burritos. You know they are delicious as they strictly follow traditional methods of cooking, such as re-fried beans and low-heat, chilli con carne.
If you do not go to Pablos for burritos that are bursting with fresh ingredients and tantalising tacos, then at least go for the live music, karaoke nights and quiz days.

Salsa Mexican Restaurant & Tequilaria (Bedfordview)

At Salsa Mexican, it is all about paying attention to detail. Quality fresh ingredients allow you to build your own unique burrito, but if you feel like ordering from the menu, you cannot go wrong with the confusing but utterly delicious nacho crusted burrito (R119) or the Tres Amigo burrito, stuffed with succulent beef, black beans, chicken, butternut and pulled pork.

The versatile tacos are served either as hard or soft shells, and if you ask really nicely, they can prepare a shell that is in-between the two. The Tacos al Gusto is worth every bit of its R135 price tag, but if you really want to go all the way with flavour and the best use of ingredients, the R139 Prawn Tostadas, filled with avocado salsa, grilled prawns with a honey and coriander dressing should be on your list to try.
