While there are many excellent Italian restaurants, not all of them are able to go the extra mile to freshly prepare their pasta on-site. For World Pasta Day on 25 October, we’ve picked some of our favourite Italian eateries serving up the freshest homemade pasta in Gauteng.
Café Del Sol Botanico (Bryanston) ?
All the plain and coloured tagliatelle, tagliolini and ravioli are homemade at this Bryanston eatery. Check out the daily specials, which could include tender pasta pockets of ravioli stuffed with roasted butternut and served with crispy sage and beurre noisette. Or try the homemade tagliatelle with almond and basil pesto, sweet cherry tomatoes and fresh Fior Di Latte mozzarella.

Casalinga Ristorante Italiano (Muldersdrift)
Expect simple and flavoursome fare at Casalinga, with most of the vegetables and herbs grown on the farm. Order the ravioli all’ impasticciata – the homemade pasta parcels are filled with beef and served with a mince, tomato and cream sauce with a hint of chilli.
Nonna Mia’s Kitchen (Parkhurst)
It’s all about the comfort food at Nonna Mia. Order a dish cooked al forno, like the homemade lasagne with beef mince or veggies.

Tortellino D’Oro (Melrose)
This restaurant packs in the charm. The assortment of fresh pasta is extensive, featuring everything from tagliatelle to gramigna, ravioli to gnocchi; all handmade and each as delicious as the next. The ravioli di zucca – filled with butternut, ricotta and almonds then tossed in butter and sage – is a highlight (when available) and the lasagne is as rich and luscious as it comes.
Alfie’s Italian Café (Hazelwood) ?
Though you’re spoiled for choice at Alfie’s, you have to go for the pasta. The gnocchi gorgonzola e noci is particularly unforgettable, with golden brown pillowy gnocchi tossed in a sharp but creamy gorgonzola with walnuts. Else order the tagliatelle alla salsiccia or the Italian sausage tagliatelle, tossed through a hot pan with olive oil and fresh tomato.

Caraffa Ristorante (Alphen Park)
All the pasta here is prepared in-house from scratch using ancient methods. The conchiglioni di Parma is a delicious preparation of conchiglie pasta cooked perfectly, tossed in a creamy gorgonzola sauce and topped with half a ripe avocado and slices of Parma ham. You can thank us later.
Eat In Italian (Sinoville)
You can’t leave without trying the pasta here, so on the off chance that you’re lured away from the pastas by something else on this tempting menu, make sure to get a takeaway. The lamb raviolini is a standout, with two giant ravioli filled with slow-cooked lamb, red wine, ruby port, fresh thyme and garlic. Else opt for the cannelloni ricotta, featuring spinach and ricotta wrapped up into cannelloni and topped with Napoletana sauce and parmesan cheese. The value for money is excellent here considering how large the portions are.
Forti Grill & Bar (Menlyn) ?
Grab a table on the patio to take full advantage of the exceptional views from Forti as you enjoy one of the steaming bowls of delectable pasta, including a great frutti di mare with freshly prepared pasta made to order. There are also vegetarian options, like the tagliolini aglie e olio and the fettucine gorgonzola (with cream, gorgonzola and parmesan).
