Food markets in the Western Cape to visit this Summer

A trip to the market is the perfect weekend plan with friends and family, and this season, we invite you to add these markets  to your list of outdoor excursions. Don’t forget the kids!

Oranjezicht City Farm Market (V&A Waterfront, Cape Town)

This weekly farmers market offers and array of fresh produce; from eggs and dairy products, to freshly baked breads and artisanal foods. The Oranjezicht Farm Market is a neighbourhood favourite since 2017 and is a non-profit initiative supported by many. There’s no entry fee to pay when visiting the market and your furry friends are welcome to go along for the culinary excursion – provided you follow the 6 strict rules. Tons of parking is available on site. The market is open from 5pm to 9pm on Wednesday, 8.15am to 2pm on Saturdays and from 9am to 2pm on Sundays.

Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market (Sedgefield)

Situated on the infamous Garden Route, this well-known market sits adjacent to the Swartvlei Lake-Lagoon. Here local is most evidently “lekker”, and the proof lies in the variety of produce available here. From free range chicken, meats and dairy products to locally produced baked and bottled goods, this market is certainly worth the drive. Open every Saturday from 7.30am to 12noon in summer and from 8am to 12noon in winter.

Blaauwklippen Family Market (Stellenbosch)

Seasonal produce is the name of the game at Blaauwklippen Family Market. Here you’ll find beautifully fresh and organic produce. Food markets on site will have you leaving penniless; selling delicious and fragrant dumplings, locally produced kalamata olives, relishes, extra virgin olive oils and so much more. Stop by at this local wander on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm.

Neighbourgoods Market (Woodstock, Cape Town)

With over 100 traders showcasing their passion and love for food and design, the Neighbourgoods Market is the heartbeat of Woodstock. The market takes place at the popular Old Biscuit Mill and features produce from the finest butchers, bakers, mongers and so much more. Experience a market vibe like no other every Saturday from 9am to 3pm and every Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Lourensford Market (Somerset West)

Taste and purchase beautiful estate wines, original artwork produced by local talent and so much more when visiting the Lourensford Market. There’s something  here to keep the whole family entertained; from Artjamming and other exciting activities for the kids, to vintage cars and archery. Visit the market on Fridays from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 11am to 4pm and Sundays from 10am to 3pm.

Harkerville Saturday Market (Plettenberg Bay)

A farmer’s and craft market, the Harkerville Market is the perfect way to spend your Saturday. Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast of your choice before scouting out the rest of the market to find out what’s on offer. Fill your baskets or shopping bags with delicious locally made dried fruits and nuts, fresh breads and meats, knock knacks and so much more. The market is open every Saturday from 8am to 12noon.

Slow Market Willowbridge (Tygervalley)

Fragrant spices waft through the market, welcoming adults and kids alike to indulge in what the market has to offer. Whether you’re in search of ostrich or game biltong, freshly baked pies, breads or toffee apples, you’re guaranteed to find 100% freshness here. The Slow Market is open every Saturday from 9am to 4pm and from 9am to 2pm on Sundays.

Franschhoek Village Market (Franschhoek)

With free entry and parking on offer, other than the price of fuel, there should be very little, to no reason to visit this family market. They boast a children’s play area to keep the kids occupied and entertained while you’re distracted by the beautiful handmade jewellery, pottery, fresh local produce and more. The Village Market is open every Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

Earth Fair Food Market (Constantia)

Grab breakfast, lunch, a relaxed afternoon drink with friends or scout for a gift for that special someone, the Earth Fair Market has got you covered. Local musicians will keep you entertained while you explore the vast offering at the market. The Earth Fair Food Market is open every Wednesday from 4pm to 9pm and from 9am to 2pm every Saturday.
