Where to find fresh, hot waffles in Jozi

We’ve rounded up a few spots in Jozi’s where the greatest waffles live! This list will satisfy everyone; from the waffle purists to those who like them towered high with gelato, Nutella, nuts, Oreo crumbs, and everything in between. 

Fab Café and Gelato (Linden) 

This cute café and ice-cream parlour in Linden has the most exquisite display of artisanal Italian gelato in town – and, along with it, delicious Belgian waffles. You can get them served plain, with syrup(R35), whipped cream, syrup, and toasted almonds(R60); or with a scoop of amazing gelato(R55). Think red velvet, white chocolate and pear, and cotton candy. If you’re looking for something savoury, opt for the breakfast waffle with cheese, spicy tomato, poached egg, and ham(R60). Enjoy this deliciousness Monday through Wednesday from 7am to 6pm; Thursday through Saturday from 7am to 10pm; and Sunday from 7am to 6pm. 

Lexi’s Healthy Eatery (Sandton) 

Did someone say breakfast all day every day? Here are some gluten-free and vegan waffles from  Lexi’s Healthy Eatery. Here you’ll find gluten- and refined sugar-free vanilla waffles served with fresh strawberries, coconut cream and vegan Nutella for only R115. If you want to be creative with your food, why not build your own waffle with the spinach stuffed waffle( R35) and add ons of your choice from R8-R85. Served every Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 9pm and Sundays at 8.30am to 3.30pm. 

Moody Cow (Clearwater Mall) 

The motto here is “Who says you can’t have waffles for breakfast, lunch and dinner?”. Every kind of waffle imaginable is available here, including classic Belgian-style waffles(R65), waffle cones(R65), waffle tacos(R65), bubble waffles(R65), Eskimo pies (wafer-thin waffles layered with gelato) and even waffle truffles (maple syrup-drenched waffle balls rolled in cocoa and chocolate, and served with gelato) for only R50. The delicious tart waffle is topped with creamy milk-tart gelato, cinnamon-macerated apple, cinnamon dust, Milky Bar drizzle and Nutty Crust cookies. Yum, Moody cow offers these golden treasures every Sunday through Thursday from 8am to 9pm and Friday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm.

Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream (Parkhurst) 

Aside from the scrumptious, rich ice creams in a multitude of wonderful and whacky flavours, Paul’s also makes beautiful thick and dense, crispy waffles. They come with a single scoop of ice cream for R56 or a double scoop for R77, finished with a drizzle of caramel or hot chocolate fudge sauce and sweet topping of your choice( sprinkles, crushed oreos and smarties). Available everyday from 9am to 7pm on Monday; 9am to 9.30pm Tuedays through Thursdays; 9am to 10pm Friday to Saturday and 9am to 8pm on Sundays. 

The most popular sweet waffles are the strawberry waffle and the decadent waffle, with roasted mixed nuts, banana, ice cream and caramel. 

 La Strada Café (Edenvale) 

La Strada serves up gorgeous old-fashioned, crisp and fluffy Belgian waffles. These cloud soft waffles are topped with delicious flavours such as banana-caramel(R76), fresh strawberries with Italian gelato(R88), and Dutch apple and cinnamon (R95). Serving them hot every Monday to Thursday from 7am to 7pm; Friday 9am to 10pm; Saturday at 8am to 10pm and Sunday from 8am to 7pm. 

Von Pickartz (Newtown) 

The traditional Liège waffles here are made from a 170-year-old secret family recipe, and moreish Dutch stroopwafels are available too. Offered to you stuffed (R60), dipped (R60), drizzled (R60), or even as a sandwich (R60) and If you want to be a bit spontaneous you could build your own for only R50 with a selection of toppings for R15. The original Belgian is dusted simply with icing sugar, but to accommodate our South African sense of flair, they offer fresh strawberries and cream; salted caramel; Nutella; seasonal fruit, and the very popular butter and fresh cream. If you’re looking for something a little zanier, add Turkish delight, nougat and honeycomb.

The Crepe van- Smoke Daddy (Fourways) 

You’ll find something tasty for everyone with so many options to choose from. Waffles served with a variety of toppings, including strawberry nutella(R65), banana nutella(R60), apple crumble (R65) and the classic oreo cookies and ice cream (R65). These golden treats are served daily, Monday 8.45am to 9.30pm; Tuesday through Friday 9am to 9.30pm; Saturday 8am to 9.30pm and Sundays 8am to 6pm so come and taste the goodness. 

Kota Joe Roadhouse   (Edenvale) 

Waffle on a stick anyone? then head over to Kota Joe’s. There are a variety of golden morsels to choose from, such as White Chocolate and Oreo(R50)  and Cinnamon Sugar and Syrup(R38). Now offering a new flavour of ferrero rocher and nutella(R56). Served with a scoop of creamy ice cream, go ahead and try your own now. Open Monday to Wednesday 11am to 8.30pm; Thursday to Friday 11am to 9pm; Saturday 10am to 9pm and Sunday 10am to 8.30pm.

Yummyness Waffle Bar (Kempton Park) 

 All you can eat brussels waffles, golden crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. Offering Lekker( A classic, A hot steamy waffle straight out the pan, dusted with icing sugar.), Delicieus (A warm waffle topped with banana, roasted mixed nuts, ice cream/cream, flaked chocolate and a choice of our decadent sauces.) and Amai zeg!
