While its name may be silly, brunch is quite possibly be the best meal of the day. It has none of the restrictions of breakfast or the stress of lunch. Once it’s 11am, it means all bets are off and you won’t get judgemental glances for shakshuka or a plate of lasagne – everything goes. (Plus cocktails are on the table!) Here’s our round-up of some of our favourite brunch spots in the city of gold.
It’s practically impossible to find a mealtime this Birdhaven spot isn’t great for, but Arbour is especially serious about brunch. For R295 on certain Saturdays of the month, you get two hours of brunch bites plus bottomless bubbly. If that doesn’t tempt you enough, enjoy the huge daily breakfast menu featuring options like galettes, health bowls and omelettes.

This spot isn’t called Breezeblock for nothing – the easy breezy spot is perfect for a lazy brunch filled with luxurious and virtuous options alike. Go for the huevos rancheros, eggs mirza (eggs baked in a smokey aubergine and turmeric tomato sauce), or pancakes with fillings like mascarpone and berries. Finish off with a slice from one of the heavenly cakes. Enjoy your cappuccino or cocktail in the sunny courtyard.

Dishes abound on the Gabriella’s breakfast menu that sound perfectly suited for the most indulgent meal of the day. Have a breakfast stack with beef fillet, a poached egg, mozzarella, mushrooms and hollandaise sauce; creamy polenta topped with a vegetarian spicy bean and tomato ragu; and chickpea pancakes with beans and avocado. Don’t leave without one of the freshly baked treats, including meringues, cakes, muffins, pastries and fudge.

Brunch is an institution at Nice, where they have several breakfast baskets to choose from. Try the salmon basket, which comes with toast, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, tomato relish and cream cheese, or go for the vegetarian basket with toast, poached eggs, mushrooms, tomato relish and avocado. You could also opt for the banting basket for a half-and-half option. If you want to spoil yourself, have one of the croissants, with the option of fillings like Nutella and strawberries.

You’re spoiled for choice at Salvation Café and each dish arrives picture perfect. Choose from the light and healthy options like poached eggs on toast, homemade granola with Greek yoghurt or creamy scrambled eggs. Or go a bit more decadent with French Toast topped with whipped cream, creamy basil mushrooms on toast or a breakfast burrito. They also brew up a host of coffees and teas, including espresso con leches and red lattes. Enjoy in the sunny courtyard or, if you’re in a rush, grab something from the deli instead.

That is a good spot – thanks for the recommendation! Sitting on their patio feels like going for a holiday 🙂
Pablo Eggs Go Bar in Melville definitely a worthy addition as a top spot on this list!
