7 single-dish restaurants in Durban

The one-dish trend is alive and well in sunny Durbs. To make your food choices easier, these popular spots focus on one kind of dish or one kind of ingredient. From chicken shops to bunny bars, here’s your pick of one-dish restaurants in Durban.

Afro’s Chicken (South Beach)

The signature chicken at this sunny yellow beachside container are what started the brand’s cult-like following – and with good reason. Get your succulent marinated chook in a flour-dusted roll with tangy lemon marinade or fiery chilli. Or get your fix with a chicken salad or juicy chicken strips. The hand-cut ‘tjips’ are the real deal and make for the perfect side to mop up all the sauce.

Bird & Co. (Ballito)

Jumping on the chicken train is this new chook shop in Ballito, from the team behind Salt Rock’s BBM Café. Tuck into offerings of deboned half chickens, wings and burgers. The chickens are all free range and come in bastings of hot, mild or lemon and herb. You can also get your chicken atop a wood-fired pizza with peri-mayo, chicken, chorizo, caramelised onions and avo.

The Bunny Bar (Morningside)

This unassuming bunny chow bar serves up just that: comforting curry-filled bunny chows ideal for a midweek supper. The small shop caters for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, with a choice of paneer bunnies and butter chicken roti rolls. Alternatively, go for one of the specials of the day like crab curry, dhal ghosht or biryani.

Plan B Dessertery (Durban North)

This dessert-only eatery is responsible for bringing the trendy bubble waffle to KZN’s shores. Get yours filled with treats like chocolate honeycomb or caramel corn. Else order some giant churros and dipping sauces, dessert tacos filled with all sorts of confections, or gourmet shakes.

Falafel Fundi (Morningside)

This is the place for some of the city’s best falafels. Get yours made to-order in a roti, a baguette or platter. You can also buy tubs of homemade hummus and babaganoush to pair with the crunchy golden bites. It’s the perfect spot for a midweek lunch or a speedy takeaway dinner.

Roti & Chai (Morningside)

This new addition to Florida Road first started out at markets and events around the city. Locals can now get their fix at the cool new eatery with menu featuring all things tandoori. Think tandoori chicken naan wraps; paneer tikka masala naan wraps; and tandoor lamb naan wraps. All naans come with salads and exciting dressings like tamarind and dhania and Nepalese chilli mayo.

Yumibowl (Umhlanga)

This little Thai-style ice-cream parlour is located at Umhlanga’s Siam Restaurant and focuses solely on colourful ice-cream scrolls hand-crafted to-order with OTT flavours and toppings. The scrolls are made by pouring sweetened cream – mixed with a flavouring of your choice – onto a dry-ice tray (the cold version of a hot plate) and then chopping and spreading the rapidly cooling mixture across the icy surface to create a thin frozen layer. Flavours include the popular Death By Chocolate bowl with chocolate-brownie ice cream and an actual brownie for garnish. There’s also the minty Cookie Monster, which is made with peppermint-flavoured ice cream, crushed Oreos and wafer cigars as a garnish.
