5 brewery restaurants in Johannesburg

Out and about in Joburg, don’t forget to stop by one of these breweries for a beer and food refuel.

Black Horse (Magaliesburg)

Part of the Black Horse Estate, Black Horse Brewery is co-located with a craft distillery (a small-batch gin and vodka distiller) and a restaurant. The estate looks out over Zeekoeihoek Valley, making it ideal for a relaxing escape from the city. The brewery itself was established by Bernard and Karen Botha in early 2012, and all the beers are brewed by Nuschka Botha, one of South Africa’s youngest female brewers. The menu is small, featuring craft burgers, beer-battered fish, a few curries and pizzas. The Black Horse Brewery focuses on perfecting its craft beers, which include easy-drinking lagers and ales. You can also book an informative brewery tour, to learn about their brewing process and the history of the estate, available on request.

Copperlake Brewery (Broadacres)

A little brewery tucked away in Broadacres, Copperlake offers a neat range of in-house brews – think English Ale, Hefeweiss, Indian Pale Ales, light and premium lagers, and other beers like the Robust Porter and Starry Eyed Blond. Experience all the signature brews by ordering the beer taster tray – a taster size of Copper Lake Brews, the Copper Lake Citrus Cooler and one guest brew. Copperlake’s secret attraction is its “Brew your own beer” concept, which is recommended as a team building exercise or for larger groups. Three weeks after the beer has been brewed, it will be featured on the pub’s menu as a guest brew. The tap room menu features wood-fired pizzas made with a signature craft beer dough, as well as homemade burgers and light snacks.

Gilroy’s (Muldersdrift)

This award-winning brewpub is headed up by legendary brewer Steve Gilroy, who founded the brewery in 2000 in his printing factory in Roodepoort, Gauteng. Gilroy’s Brewery was one of the first microbreweries in South Africa. Now the beer is free-flowing, people are dancing and smiling and all around you, the air is filled with live music, laughter and mouth-watering aromas. At some point during the afternoon, Gil inevitably stops by your table to personally greet you. Some of their beers include the Gilroy Premium Lager, the Serious Dark Ale, the Traditional Ruby Ale and the Genuine Ginger Beer. The restaurant serves up pub fare in its most traditional sense: think bangers and mash, beer-battered fish and chips, burgers, steaks, eisbein and hearty pies. Most items on the menu are infused with one of Gilroy’s beers. Gilroy’s also offers a unique beer-tasting experience.

Mad Giant Tap Room (Blairgowrie)

Mad Giant Tap Room is the sister brand to Mad Giant. Recently opened, their new spot features all the beers you’ve come to love from the Mad Giant brand, with a combination of modern contemporary pub and fire food. Pair your chosen brew for a farm-to table experience. Try the pulled lamb tacos or dainty risotto balls for a light snack. If you’re in the mood for something a little heartier, the nine-hour peach-wood-smoked beef short rib served with Asian slaw has your name written all over it. There are also a select few cocktails and fine wines on the menu for non-beer drinkers.

Soweto Brewing Company (Soweto)

This spot was founded in 2012 by Ndumiso Madlala, who brought the craft beer industry to one of Southern Africa’s largest townships and created a world-class beer that is truly Sowetan. Named Joburg’s trendiest township eatery, here you’ll find not only Soweto lagers, but also township-style pub food. Learn more about how this African beer is made with a brewery tour and beer tastings. The restaurant wing, called Ubuntu Kraal Beergarden, offers a truly authentic experience. Choose meat cuts to braai (in traditional shisa nyama style) on the open fire and tuck in using your bare hands. Try the apple-ale-basted pork ribs served with a bucket of crisp chips. All meals ordered can be served with pap, mqushu, spicy chakalala, fluffy dumplings, chips or salad. Pair your chosen meal with Soweto Brewing Company’s speciality beers – from the original lager to an apple ale, cherry ale, Orlando Stout or Gogo’s Ginger Beer, all served on tap.
