Where to eat this New Year’s Eve 2010

It’s the countdown to the second biggest night of the year (the biggest being last Sunday when we announced the Top 10, well for us anyway), New Year’s Eve. Forget throwing your own shindig, these eateries have done all the hard work for you.

Durban

9th Avenue Bistro
The set menu is fresh, contemporary, creative and incredibly good value at R350 per person.

Czar
Those in the mood for dinner and dancing should head down to this swanky establishment.  The menu will be à la carte, and dinner guests will pay R100 to go upstairs to the New Year’s party. For those not having dinner, the party will set you back R200. Expect cocktails, canapés and top-class DJs.

Freedom Café
For just R150 you can enjoy a three-course set menu while you see in the New Year. Expect Franschhoek salmon trout, roasted quail stuffed with chicken and lemon mousse, and a coconut mousse rambutan jelly.

Ile Maurice
There’ll be dinner, dancing and DJs to make sure that you have a night to remember.

The Grill Room
Head to the Grill Room for its à la carte menu and see in the New Year in style.

Razzmatazz
Go to Razzmatazz for a choice of set menus, starting at R150 per head. Expect grilled queen prawns, silky sirloins and tender lamb shank.

Cape Town

1800 Degree Grill Room
Indulge in a decadent three-course menu of seared sashimi, beef fillet and white chocolate mousse with hazelnut dacquoise. This menu will set you back R750 per person and includes access to the Sky Bar’s New Year’s Eve Party.

Azure
Tuck into a five-course menu while enjoying live entertainment. The cost per person is R1 650 and includes a Kir Royale on arrival, all the traditional treats and a glass of champagne at midnight.

Boo Radley’s
Join a flirty thirties inspired Peep Show Party at Boo Radley’s. Expect a decadent dinner, classic drinks, film noir, a burlesque dancer and music from the era. Dinner tickets are R450 per person and tickets are limited to just 50. On the menu is cocktails and canapes; a starter of tomato consomme or prawn cocktail; T-bone steak or grilled swordfish; and eskimo pie for dessert. Each table of four will receive a bottle of cap classique at midnight.

Ben’s on the Beach
Head down to this beachside haunt for a night of high jinks and fabulous food. The menu includes everything from tempura prawns to a Mauritian seafood casserole, beef fillet and even Wiener schnitzel. It costs R245 per person.

Blonde
The night will begin with cocktails and canapés and will move onto a sublime five-course menu. Some of the highlights include flambéed duck livers, creamy tomato and onion smoor, fresh coriander, toasted grissini and truffle-infused beef fillet with herbed risotto cake, among many, many other choices. The cost is R900 per head.

Catharina’s Restaurant
A multi-sensory fine dining experience that combines gourmet cuisine with impeccable service and ambience. Enjoy a four-course set menu for R1195 per person.

The Country Kitchen
Put on your swinging sixties gear and party in the new year at The Country Kitchen. For only R350 per person, enjoy pre-dinner drinks, a three-course set menu and lots of dancing.

The Roundhouse
Bubbly, canapés and a menu that will make you go weak at the knees; this is what The Roundhouse has in store for you on the last night of the year. The night will cost R1995.00 per person and there will be live entertainment and complimentary bubbly on arrival.

Pigalle
Unfurl your feathers and shine your spats, polish your pearls and comb your pencil moustache in readiness for a night of unbridled decadence and 1920’s hedonism. Entertainment for the evening will begin with a five-piece party band that will entertain you with contemporary, jazz and swing music. The cost is R1 250 per person, including dinner.

Pure
A menu of pure delight will cost you just R800 for six-courses, or R1050 with wine pairing. Indulge in gratin of asparagus and smoked salmon with tarragon butter sauceand pan-fried line fish with braised cabbage, wilted spinach and juniper berry beurre blanc.

Mange Tout
Fine-dining restaurant Mange Tout will be transformed into a scene from “Out of Africa” for this upcoming New Year’s Eve. Guests are invited to dress up and enjoy an evening of sunset cocktails, a four-course (at R600 per person) or seven-course (at R980 per person) dinner and live music and dancing.

Johannesburg

Browns of Rivonia
Brown’s has kept the menu a la carte for the night, think springbok carpaccio, roast free-range duck, Karoo ostrich fillet and venison lasagne.

La Belle Terrasse Restaurant
Make sure you’ve got a spot on this terrace when the fireworks light up Johannesburg’s skyline. Groove to 70s music, while tucking into a buffet of crayfish, sushi, rack of lamb and guinea fowl — to name but a few dishes. The cost per head is R720.

Lucky Bean
The menu here is varied and delicious, expect everything from salt and pepper calamari to springbok pie; two-courses will set you back R150, three-courses, R180.

Olive’s Bistro
Olive’s Bistro has put together a tempting three-course menu for R238 per person. Tuck into peppered brie, velvety fillet tornados and chocolaty dessert.

Roots

Raise your flute of champagne and toast farewell to 2010 at the Forum Homini’s Gatsby evening. The evening will begin with a welcoming drink followed by a four-course celebratory dinner and dancing on the deck. Dinner and dance at R750 per person. Overnight packages are also available.

Tradewinds Restaurant
Enjoy a lavish buffet and plenty of bubbles and live entertainment for just R495 per person.

Winelands

River Café
Spend the last night of the year in this leafy oasis and enjoy a four-course set menu for R695 per person. The dishes are creative and more-ish, from chalmar beef fillet with cream of portobello mushrooms to deep-Fried kataiffi with a soft boiled egg, asparagus mousse and goats cheese.

La Vigna
Dine in style at this sophisticated eatery on a five-course menu that showcases contemporary, delicious treats. Expect oysters with cucumber jelly, caramelised monkfish, honeycomb parfait and much more. The menu will set you back R345 per person.

The Restaurant at Grande Provence
Indulge in a 5-course menu for R1490 per person; this includes complimentary arrival as well as countdown champagne. Rainbow beetroot carpaccio, Lobster bisque, and confit shank of veal are just some of the epicurean delights you can expect.

Restaurant Mangiare at Capelands
Enjoy a fine five-course gourmet menu for R390 per head. Expect the likes of porcini mushrooms, asparagus, truffles and homemade ravioli.
