Owner's description

Welcome to The Bull Run, a true Sandton legendary restaurant that's been satisfying discerning palates for over two decades - an icon of the financial district. Inspired by the fast-paced world of the New York Stock Market and a clever nod to NY grill houses, The Bull Run delivers a dining experience that's as rich and dynamic as the market itself.

Be immersed in a masterfully designed space that exudes an air of sophistication, where every detail speaks to a bygone era of wealth and taste. The décor feels as if it has been meticulously curated over decades: plush leather armchairs and dark wood panelling, with walls adorned with art in ornate gold and black frames. The low ambient lighting from an antique chandelier bathes the space in a warm, golden glow that feels intimate and grand. The larger-than-life, sculpted bronze bull standing proudly at the entrance, a symbol of rising markets and resilience, perfectly captures the spirit of The Bull Run—where excellence is always on the uptrend. As you settle in, feel the pulse of Maude Street’s hustle and bustle from one of our sidewalk tables.

The Bull Run has been in a steady bull market, consistently offering high-quality, affordable cuisine paired with impeccable service. The menu is a living expression of creativity and refinement, constantly evolving to reflect the ever-rising standards of quality and innovation, much like the dynamic nature of the stock market.

When it comes to the main event - our succulent cuts of meat - we’re in a class of our own. Aged to perfection in-house for 28 days, our steaks are a journey for the palate, with options like wet-aged steaks for those who love a buttery, tender cut, and dry-aged cuts for connoisseurs who crave deep, earthy flavours and prepared to suit every preference. The stakes are high with our Top Traders selection - a heavyweight in the world of dining.

But the Bull Run is more than just steak - The menu is a diverse investment, offering everything from vibrant salads, and timeless starters to generous burgers, signature chicken, innovative fish, and market-savvy vegetarian and vegan options. Finish strong with a sweet return.

The Dollar Bar - A true no-nonsense space for those who know how to play the market. Browse our extensive wine list, carefully curated to offer exceptional pairings, or sip on one of our signature cocktails, blending tradition with subtle innovation to create a menu that caters to every taste.

Our Private Dining Room provides an intimate, stylish reprieve - protected from the restaurant’s bustling activity - where you can focus on what matters most: fine food, great company, and unbroken conversation. Whether you're hosting a celebration or discussing business strategy.

We serve much more than food - We offer an experience that brings together the sophistication of the financial world with the richness of culinary craftsmanship.

I love steak. I always have. So whenever I visit a new city, I like to try out a few steakhouses. In my travels, I've seldom been more disappointed with a restaurant. First, the good. The restaurant is stunning with great atmosphere. Sitting inside the restaurant was a relaxing experience until the food came. I ordered the rump steak, and it's the toughest rump I've ever had in my life. I upsets me when I can get better quality meat from the supermarket up the road. But if the meat was tough, I could perhaps overlook that. The meat was terribly under seasoned. For the premium price I paid for the cut, I would've expected some salt at least. When asked how the steak was, I replied honestly. The chap who I spoke with asked if I ordered the steak plain. When I told him that I did indeed order it plain, he told me that that was the issue. I was told that I should've ordered a sauce. If the steak is such poor quality that it needs a sauce, why am I paying a premium for it. And why is the meat only seasoned if you order a sauce? The chap came back and told me there was nothing that could be done about the steak, but offered me a free beer to compensate. I agreed to the beer, but after a few sips, I left. I was rather angry at the poor quality of the food that I just wanted to leave. I left without tipping since a) the food was bad and b) the service was slow. I do however feel uneasy about not tipping. This is out of character for me, and not something I would usually do. But I just wanted to get out - what's that say about the experience? That I would leave most of a beer and go somewhere else? The restaurant is empty, but the service is stupidly slow. And to need a toothpick after spending R150 on steak is disgusting. Avoid this restaurant, and rather go to the myriad of better restaurants in the area. The street food vendor up the road sells steak rolls for R40 which are tender AND well seasoned.
The new Bull Run is a real improvement. In the evening it would be better if there were more guests, the ambience would be better. Service is a little patchy but clearly they are doing something about that. The food is great, if there's a problem they are quick to fix it.

An experience that did not live up to expectations. Our steaks were overcooked and arguing with persistent management in the restaurant on a busy Friday night made this a forgettable experience.
