On Saturday 25 April we were en route the Village of Rhodes in the North Eastern Cape. It is a long drive from Gauteng with Bloemfontein being halfway. We had padkos, but felt for a good cup of coffee or tea and something sweet before the last stretch. Just before we crossed the mighty Orange River into Aliwal North, we saw a signboard "The Stables" and made a quick left turn. The best decision of the weekend as far as food was concerned. A haven on the bank of the river with charming gardens, the Stables offer stylish, but relaxed light meals and given by the comments from the diners: worth writing home about. We settled for lemon meringue and cheese cake and it was delicious. I will look for an excuse to go back and the accommodation looks spectacular too.
