Food
Situated in a courtyard with tables under the oldest fruit-producing vine in Stellenbosch, Spek & Bone is a relaxed, informal eatery and wine bar that is part of chef Bertus Basson’s stable. Expect generous sharing-style plates with a focus on bold, punchy flavours using sustainably sourced produce, paired with great South African wines. There are nine small plates to choose from, including the likes of lamb wontons with an Asian dressing and a topping of crunchy spring onions. The wontons are deliciously crispy and deliver good flavour – well-balanced by the dressing, which adds an umami note. Other standouts include sustainably sourced roast fish with pickled cabbage, tonkatsu broth and XO sauce (the cabbage offers great contrast and freshness with the rich broth); and gnocchi with mushrooms, Dalewood Huguenot cheese and chives. The cheese offers a hit of umami that perfectly offsets the pillowy gnocchi, while the pangrattato topping finishes it off beautifully and provides great texture. Vegetarians will also be pleased with smoked cauliflower, burnt butter and hazelnuts ¬– the cauliflower is shaved and complemented by the nutty burnt butter, with the hazelnuts adding another flavour dimension. Carnivores will enjoy the steak with a rich, balanced Jerusalem-artichoke velouté. If you struggle to choose, there’s also an option of a chef’s menu, which comprises the chef’s choice of seven dishes. Dessert is a toss-up between a dark-chocolate mousse with orange-and-vanilla ice cream, or burnt banana, peanut butter miso ice cream and brandy caramel sauce. Each plate is well-priced and delivers on both flavour and value. Those with special dietary requirements will be accommodated as far as possible, but the restaurant cannot accommodate all requests.

Drinks
There’s an interesting, well-priced wine list offering red, white and sparkling wines by the glass and bottle. There are also beers and soft drinks on offer.

Service
Service is relaxed and friendly, with the chef happy to chat about the menu. His energy and confidence are apparent on the plate, too.

Ambience
The atmosphere here is relaxed and fun, with tables in the shady courtyard the best place to be on a warm day. There’s also indoor seating for when it’s cooler. It’s a family-friendly space, but may not be suitable for very young children.

We were very fortunate to have the whole restaurant to ourselves for lunch this week. It’s a funky, rustic space situated in an off street courtyard. Executive Chef, Michael Fuller, manages a small brigade to create imaginative, delicious food. My wife is a veggie, she, like me, purred our way through six dishes, which Michael kindly explained, as he served. At under R300 per person, it is incredible value, synonymous with all of Bertus Basson’s offerings. Stellie has really developed a vibe over the last couple of years, more casual and independent. This vibrancy, compared to stagnating Franschhoek, makes it the Winelands destination. Put Spek & Bone on your must do list, you will not be disappointed.
We where a table of 8 last week, the venue is amazing with a great atmosphere it wasn’t very busy with around 20 other guests, the waiter explained the menu concept and took our drink order, after the drinks arrived. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes before the waiter returned to take our order. Then the food started to arrive 1 plate at a time out of 20 plus plates 45 minutes since the first plate my meal started to arrive at the table but everyone on the table was done eating, the food was below average and really nothing special, needless to say this was a long painful evening
I took my girlfriend to Spek and Bone for our 1 year anniversary. Let’s just say it did not disappoint, the food and wine selection itself was cause for celebration. The friendly waitstaff and manager made us feel welcome. Lovely space and vibrant energy. I will definitely be back and hopefully not just for the next anniversary, I don’t think we can wait that long for another gnocchi.
Went to Spek & Bone the other night for dinner. Truly a magical place hidden away in it's own little corner. As you walk thrpugh the alley way it feels like you leave the hustle of the town behind. The food was great with a good amount of variety, portions not too big so that you can enjoy several different dishes of the menu, especially when you like to pick it your food like I do. Excellent wine list with a few lesser know wine makers, but still great quality. Service was good and allowed me to take it at my own pace without feeling rushed or unwelcome. A must try if you want to do something different from the usual night out.
I went to Spek & Bone for the first time two weekends ago... and I'm still thinking of the food! Each dish took us on a journey, with unique flavours and textures. The standout was the mosbolletjie steak tartare sandwich. So South African, so delicious. At the recommendation of our server, we had the cauliflower salad, which was also mindblowing. And the pork belly tortillas were just yumminess personified. There were so many other dishes that I wanted to try, I will definitely be back!
