Owner's description

Named for the warm winds of the Mediterranean, Sirocco is a popular eatery where Knysna's fabulously hip and design-conscious often gather over long lunches and lazy dinners. The restaurant is dramatically situated on the water’s edge in the trendy Thesen Harbour area, so it's only fitting that the menu features a large selection of shellfish – from spicy Thai prawn stir-fry or oriental mussels topped with lemon grass, chilli and coriander, to Chef Hebel’s take on bouillabaisse, grilled petit poussins with olive oil and lemon, or a tender chargrilled fillet of beef.

They have lovely views, calming and relaxing. Our Waitress; Laura was extremely friendly and attentive. The overall experience was okay to good. When in Knysna, I would maybe visit them again. It is also a lovely place for having quiet drinks. Most establishment in the vicinity were noisy. I think that some of their dishes are over priced, I had a Lamb Shank with a price tag of R215. It was just okay, it was not as succulent and it was not cooked to perfection, was not falling off the bone and a bit hard to slice and chew. The spices are really what made it to not fall on the bad tasting side. I would give their lamb shank a 2.5/5. Their veggies that were accompanying the shank were over cooked, the only thing that tasted well was their mash potatoes. My boyfriend had half peri peri chicken,It was well prepared and their peri-peri sauce was extremely good, it was a simple no frills meal but very well done and I would say well priced at R115. I would recommend that one orders simple dishes and not signature dishes at this establishment. My highlight was oysters and bubbly
The stars are a combined assessment of sirocco on the two occasions we considered them for lunch. The first experience we had adequate service and impressive food but not really deserving of the fine-dining reference. The service was very slow but was redeemed by one waitress who had the foresight to enquire and bring an appetizer to placate the hungry children. We thought we'd go back a 2nd time -very bad idea- awful!! We headed there in the morning to book a table for lunch. The manager I guess, the guy who does reservations at front desk at least, said we should come at 2.30 and he'd organize a table. At 2.30 we were there and asked if he had a table for us -he was immediately agitated and said no. There was a table behind us and we enquired if that was available not seeing any reserved sign on it. again, a very clear no but emphasized with an aggressive finger stating it had been booked since the morning implying we should've booked and accepted his earlier suggestion of a table outside the restaurant in front of another store! When we said, " fine, no problem" and left he continued talking at us rudely. My husband went back to tell him there was nothing to justify his rudeness, aggression and nastiness demonstrated towards us. He then angrily waved his hands ushering us out of his restaurant and threatening to call security!! My husband replied saying, "what for? please do!". This all in front of seated guests - he clearly couldn't care less about managing his lack of patience and tolerance. He is a thin skinned individual who is out of his depth and in the perfectly wrong job for himself. Whoever put him in there in the first place must also be out of touch with the kind of skills required at the front desk. We will not return to sirocco-their food and service are not that good to make up for this kind of treatment! there are many more options in knysna with perfectly friendly, competent adults and equally varied menus serving quality food!
As locals and regular patrons of the restaurant, my husband and I decided to have an early lunch there on this sunny and hot public holiday day. The restaurant was empty when we arrived and we planned to sit outside on the deck and asked the waitress if she could open one of the umbrellas for some much-needed shade. She immediately appeared apprehensive and informed us that she first had to check with the manager. This took a while and then she eventually emerged again she informed us that the manager would not allow any umbrellas to be opened due to the wind. We pointed out to her that all the establishment around them had all their umbrellas open. She was friendly and tried to help, but we were not going to sit under the blazing sun on our own. I also informed her that we would not be having lunch there and that I would be lodging a complaint. At that stage she said she would call the manager. He eventually emerged and we explained that we could not understand his logic regarding the umbrellas. From the word go he was aggressive and we advised him that we are leaving and that Sirocco would not be seeing us anytime to soon, if ever again. At that stage he gestured us away from the establishment, waiving his hands like we were intruders and informing us - in an almost screaming voice - to go away, go somewhere else, etc. All this in full view of several tourist groups at the shop and adventure centre. As we walked away he even added a very audible f*** off. The worst attitude I have ever experienced in Knysna and a restaurant I will never visit again. I hope the owners take steps against this individual (read: rotten apple), as other managers are known to be friendly and helpful.

We visited Sirocco last night and it was terrible! The service was shocking with the waitress plonking our food on the table. Never checking if everything was ok. The front of house manager was chatting to staff all night and never came to check on the table. Definitely will not go back.
