There’s a new restaurant in Design Quarter, Fourways. The Rock, one of two adjoined restaurants – the other being Carnelian at The Rock – opened earlier this year in February. They’ve since gained much popularity. The Rock serves a range of Mediterranean style dishes. I visited them a few weeks ago. My benedict and I ordered a mix of starters to share including the calamari and jalapeno poppers. The calamari and squid heads were grilled and served with a side of lemon butter. The jalapeno poppers were stuffed with feta and bacon bits, fried in bread crumbing and served with a side of blue cheese dressing. Both of the starters were good. Be warned though, the poppers are seriously hot! For my main meal, I had the baby kingklip. The baby kingklip is basted in a citrus chilli butter, grilled and served on the bone on a bed of mashed potato and chives. Wow! I’ve always enjoyed kingklip and this meal certainly did not disappoint. More details and pictures here https://getinmybelly.co.za/2018/05/28/the-rock/
I went to The Rock in Design Quarter last week Friday with my family for a celebratory dinner. What a lovely time we had. The hosts were friendly and inviting the moment we arrived and we were served promptly. Our waiter was fantastic. We had reserved a table inside. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful. We all ordered a variety of things for our mains. I had the sirloin, which was cooked perfectly. My husband had the fish and chips, which was huge. Other guests at our table ordered the bacon and brie burger, the prawn pasta, and a pizza. My son is only four and he was treated like royalty. He was shown to the gelato bar where he tried as many flavours as he wanted and then settled on a cup of the Ferrero Rocher ice cream. Despite others at the table being full from dinner, almost everyone got ice cream too after trying it. Such a lovely evening and cannot wait to be back!
The Rock is a fantastic venue with great food, helpful and attentive staff that are always happy to go out of their way. The comfort and ambience is a great factor and makes The Rock great for any kind of function, meeting, birthday or just a quick meal alone or with a large group. The decor is amazing, seriously go take a look around and see for yourself.
I'd love to give this place a better rating simply because the service is impeccable, the decor is gorgeous and the vibe is fabulous! But... The star of the show, the food, let's it down hopelessly! I ordered the jalapeño burger. The burger was a fairly standard burger that was topped with two jalapeño poppers. Neither the bun, nor the burger patty inspired me. The burger was a little dry and didn't have any seared crust on the meat, despite it being hand pressed. The jalapeño poppers had a nice tasting breading, but the breading was far too heavy. My partner ordered the ribs and wings, the wings were ok, but the same heavy breading made an appearance. The ribs were also dry and kinda stringy. For dessert, I had the kataifi. Firstly, the promised chocolate eggs were in absentia and replaced by chocolate chips. Secondly, the entire dessert was sickly sweet, and this is coming from someone with a sweet tooth and who loves dessert! Again, we had a great time at The Rock, but the food just doesn't cut the grade.
