They bill themselves as a "family-style" restaurant. I would say the description is quite apt. They have a play area and there is a kiddies menu...and it's not a Spur!
The food is quite passable, however, if you are looking for a gastronomic experience you will never forget, this is not the place. The pizzas are decent, but toppings not very exciting. The burgers are made from scratch and are very tasty - however they let themselves down with the super market bought roll and garnish; c'mon, lettuce, tomato, onion and a sliced cucumber is not the most exciting combo in the world.
I always get a bit nervous when I see snails on a menu and can't hear any French being spoken! In fact, if your Afrikaans is not up to scratch you may struggle to get some info from your waiting staff.
The overall experience is pleasant - kids playing, vineyard either side of you and a beautiful mountain at the back. They also have a pretty decent wine menu and stock most SAB beers - afraid craft beers are not well represented - pretty sad when you consider that there are 2 micro breweries within 5km.
The meal will not break the bank and is pretty decent value for money.
As a parent, I will go back simply for the fact that nobody else in town caters to kids or has a play area. However, for the food only, I would give it a skip.

Stopped at Pheasant while driving through the area and wgat a surprise! Food was delicious and they do have beer, even though it is not on the winelist. Really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Had the most awful experience on 02/02/2014. We specially booked an outside table - when we got there an outside table was not available. It was clear that they only cater for the local people of the Valley. We ordered a starter which took about an hour to arrive. Before we received the starter we ordered our main meal for which we also waited - we eventually cancelled our order and left having sat there for 2 hours. The waiter never came past us to ask if everything was okay or if we needed more drinks. I will most definitely never go there again. I must say the food that we did get was okay and the beer was cold. There are definitely better places in the Valley where I will go. I am not an "outsider" to to the area - my parents have a house there and we go there a lot.

We absolutely love Pleasant Pheasant! It has become a ritual to stop there on Friday evenings for dinner when we spend the weekend in the Riebeek Valley. The food is consistently good, and so is the service. You get your steak as you order it, unlike many five star restaurants where your steak is often overdone or just not five star. The kids enjoy going there and are well catered for. In addition you find good value for money here.
