Every so often we become despondent when we read about creations like the piecaken and the cinnamon spun roll being created abroad. But if crazy pastry creations get you excited, we have good news: the wonut is now available on our shores.
Allegedly first dreamt up by some place called Waffles Café in Chicago, the wonut is a doughnut-waffle hybrid. At Waffles Café they come in all kinds of crazy flavours and are topped with everything from red velvet cake crumbs and candied orange peel to toasted marshmallow and matcha powder.
If Chicago seems a little far away, you can now get your hands on a wonut at Jo Bean Waffle Café in Northcliff.
Served on a stick, these ingenious donut-shaped waffles are made with a waffle batter and cooked in a special waffle iron to give them a donut shape. They’re then deep-fried before being dipped in either chocolate or caramel and sprinkled with hundreds and thousands for a little crunch. One could be yours for just R12.
The café has also been known to make marbled jaffa muffins – chocolate orange confections inspired by British Jaffa cakes – and an inspiring range of Belgian waffles with toppings like fruit salad, granola and honey; banana with Bar-One sauce, Peppermint Aero with Bar-One sauce; chocolate mousse with ice cream or cream; and chai latte spice with white chocolate, pecans and ice cream. And yes, there are banting treats for those on a low-carb diet. (But not the wonut, obviously.)
