It was with great sadness that diners in Linden and surrounds waved goodbye to the exotic treats of Suan Thai. In the months following the tragic loss, many tried and failed to revive the neighbourhood spot, so when brothers Klint and Kurt Pietersen finally opened Stir on 3 August 2013, Linden rejoiced. With a fire crackling in the corner, affordable food and a selection of amazing South African wines, Stir is set to become the neighbourhood’s go-to eatery for impromptu dinners with close friends.
The small menu combines traditional South African favourites with more exotic flavours. Diners get a chance to indulge in nostalgic dishes like bobotie served with stewed fruit, just like mom used to make, or explore more adventurous options like eggplant and zucchini tagine, or masala chicken, chickpea and coconut curry. Kurt, the head chef (and former chef at Possum’s Bistro), mixes it up with different tastes and flavours and changes the menu to reflect trends and seasons. Everything from the handwritten blackboard to the personalised recommendations by owner Klint, who manages the front of house, makes diners feel like their needs are a priority. Be sure to start your Stir experience with a salad of poached pear with avocado, strawberry and goat’s cheese, and try the croissant pudding if you’re in the mood for something sweet after your meal – you won’t be sorry. Prices range between R48 and R115.
Stir’s wine collection forms part of the little restaurant’s decor, which would make any wine lover feel right at home. The collection consists of a number of South Africa’s favourite table wines like Wolftrap, Graham Beck, Boschendal and Darling Cellars. Expect to find your favourite.
Having an owner in the restaurant is generally a guarantee of good service. One owner manages the kitchen while the other takes care of customers; so the service is excellent. Waiters are friendly, clued-up on the menu and deliver food and drinks promptly. Owner Klint also likes to swing by the table to recommend his favourite dishes. No diner is neglected.
The team did an excellent job of renovating the old space. Warm colours and soft lighting, flames from the fireplace reflecting in wine bottles, friendly service and a full restaurant make for a very comfortable dining experience. Stir is a home away from home.
