The community garden Moya we Khaya (The Spirit of Home) was formed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in early 2014 when 12 gardeners started growing vegetables. One of its founding members, Tenjiwe Christina Kaba, had been trying to get permission to farm the land from as far back as 1995 but was continuously denied. However, it didn’t stop her from fighting for her vision of a community garden.
Today, Ma Kaba (as she’s affectionately known) and the vegetable farmers of Moya we Khaya supply the Mount Nelson Hotel with their world-class produce. They could be supplying to more restaurants and hotels if they could expand their operations.
