First Thursday began in London when the White Chapel Gallery decided to get more members of the public to see art by opening in the evening once a month. Today, the concept exists in cities around the world. A team called The Thursdays began the movement in South Africa in 2012 in Cape Town and in 2015 in Joburg. Today, the Cape Town event has grown to a thriving monthly event, which sees thousands of art viewers thronging the streets around Bree Street, Church Street, Loop Street and the rest of the City Bowl on the first Thursday of each month. It’s become more than just an art movement; it’s a festive food-and-drinks event, too. We sent one of our intrepid videographers to brave the crowds to find some of the best food to be had on First Thursdays in Cape Town.
