The numbers are sobering: 3.165 million children in South Africa suffer from household hunger, and stunted mental and physical growth (caused by malnourishment) in the first 1000 days of life is mostly irreversible. Eat Out is partnered with Stop Hunger Now SA, part of an international organisation that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid worldwide. The organisation partners with small Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) to make sure at-risk children get a nutritionally balanced meal on days they attend school. By supporting the ECDs with food, the program also allows the owners to invest saved money in upgrading their often very basic facilities. If you’d like to volunteer your time, SHN SA holds public meal-packaging events every second Saturday of the month. Watch their website for opportunities to volunteer.
