Diane de Beer visits Koi in Pretoria to get a taste of their sushi, dim sum and other spicy Asian fare.
The name suggests that fish might be the main focus, but it doesn’t have to be. The menu is varied, starting with dim sum and sushi, which can form the main part of your meal or simply be shared as a starter. Koi’s sushi platters are pretty, generous and served with only a slight nod to western palates while remaining authentic. Main meals can vary from red Thai curry made with chicken, prawns or vegetables to something more traditional like slow-roasted lamb dusted in cumin and coriander and served on mash with a soy-chilli sauce and lime gremolata, which adds Asian flair. Diners will be spoiled for choice with the array of riches on offer.
Quality is what they’re going for. It might be pricey, but the selection offers excellent wine to pair with the food. If you’re more adventurous, try their Asian-inspired cocktails or one of their special teas.
Staff are warm and friendly with a professional touch.
The no-fuss contemporary design has sleek, clean lines and lots of natural light. Koi’s venue is off to the side in a mainly food-oriented centre with an exclusivity that sets it apart. It has a relaxed vibe during the day and truly comes alive at night.
In terms of both design and cuisine, Koi possesses an individuality that puts it in a class of its own.
It is very delicious.
