Last month, Johannesburg’s popular Union Pop-up Bar, opened up a temporary cocktail spot on Cape Town’s Bree Street. The stylish watering hole may be on the city’s trendiest street but its under-the-radar approach is what makes it a true hidden gem. The pop-up bar is located at 107 Bree Street on the first floor and is open to the public Wednesday to Saturday until 10 December 2016.
This unpredictable bar likes to keep its fans on their toes by opening and closing in new spots throughout South Africa, explains the team: “It’s as we like it – keeps us on our toes and keeps the menu fresh and relevant and a surprise, even to us!”. Marketers and event planners Joshua Shifren and Justin Kramer are the brains behind this on-trend operation and have partnered with Bree Street neighbours IYO Burgers to feed hungry bar hoppers.
As for the drinks, the stylish bar is pouring some pretty inventive cocktails using their Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and other top quality liquors. These include the Pinups Pleasure with a blend of Sailor Jerry spiced rum, citrus tonic, orange juice and Van der Hum liqueur, the Hell Fire with Hendrick’s Gin, lime wedges, ginger beer and some molecular air, and the tikka-style Rats Get Fat cocktail with rum, banana liqueur, Falernum Tikki Spice syrup and orange juice.
Union Pop-up Bar is currently open on Wednesday to Saturday with plans to set up shop in Melrose Arch this month as well as more venues in Cape Town in February 2017.
