It’s certainly the time of year for a bit of inspiration and a bit of ‘me’ time. The Design Indaba Conference is taking place at the end of the month, where a few days are filled with the most inspiring, creative guest speakers who share their uplifting insights with the delegates. I have always taken in so much inspiration when spending this much-needed quality time to just sit and absorb – it’s such a luxury!
A few years ago we had the pleasure of listening to Ferran Adria from elBulli, which was the best restaurant in the world at the time. This year – it’s quite hard to believe – the world’s number one is with us once again: René Redzepi from acclaimed Noma in Copenhagen. I can't help wonder where René will choose (or be advised) to eat whilst here…
When Ferran walked into that auditorium it was electric. I had not experienced anything like it, and I am sure it won't be any different when René treats us with insights into his gastronomic foraging food adventure.
On a sadder note, I would like to take the time to honour a wonderful food critic who inspired many chefs, restaurateurs and the people who read her food pages at The Financial Mail. Linda Stafford passed away at the weekend. Over the years I had heard so much about Linda but never had the opportunity to meet her, until the media trip to Spain that we did together towards the end of last year.
She was such fun: we shared lots of giggles that often turned into raucous laughter, and after a few days I managed to convince her that jamón is jolly nice. As chef Arnold Tanzer said to me after hearing the news, “Linda was a credible restaurant reviewer whom the industry completely respected.” And she always meant every word. An inspiration to many.
