Best hide those bread rolls, because professor Tim Noakes is set to co-host the world’s first international low-carbohydrate high-fat (LCHF) conference in Cape Town from 20 to 22 February 2015.
The First International Low Carb, High Fat Health Summit will play host to over ten internationally acclaimed doctors and researchers in the low-carb field, including bestselling author of The Fat Revolution, Christine Cronau, and physician, scientist and co-author of the New York Times best selling book The New Atkins for a New You, Dr Stephen Phinney. The popularity of the LCHF lifestyle in South Africa is largely attributed to professor Noakes, whose book The Real Meal Revolution has remained at the top of the South African bestsellers list, despite being met with scepticism and even outrage from some local medical professionals.
The conference is the brainchild of co-host Karen Thomson, founder of the Sugar Free Revolution online program, and avid supporter of the sugar-free, low-carb lifestyle. She describes the event as an opportunity for world experts to gather under one roof to share studies and stories, and ultimately dispel myths about the fat revolution.
“Cape Town is the world leader of the LCHF lifestyle,” says Thomson. “It’s the birthplace of a revolution that was started by the everyday person on the street, who, despite the controversy and criticism from medical professionals, sees that it works for them.” Thomson believes the conference will be a “phenomenal” experience for their international speakers, some of whom will travel here at their own expense. “They promote the LCHF lifestyle all over the world, but now they are able to come to a place where there is such huge support.”
Visit the website for ticket information. Events leading up to the conference includes screenings of the Sugar Free documentary series during November and the launch of Thomson’s book Sugar Free: Freedom from Sugar and Carb Addiction, on 19 February 2015.
At Eat Out we love our buttery croissants and eat way too many macarons to call ourselves LCHF devotees, but since our banting list received so much attention, we’d love to hear what our readers think.

“Still think Cape Town sports scientist Prof Tim Noakes doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to carbohydrates and saturated fat? Think again. A small but significant new study by US scientist Dr Jeff Volek, a world-renowned expert in low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) research, is more proof that Noakes is on the right dietary path. Not for everyone of course, but then Noakes has never said his diet is for everyone, despite what his critics claim he said. Like Volek, Noakes believes that no diet can ever be a ‘one size fits all’, but that the science behind LCHF is compelling in certain medical conditions, including for insulin resistance and diabetes – and personalised nutrition as medicine is often the answer instead of drugs.”

I’ve been on this eating plan for 4 months, now. I’ve not lost any weight, but not gained any either. However! No more blood sugar problems (also not taking Glucophage anymore) and my IBS has disappeared. I can’t take afternoon naps on holiday any more, as I don’t get tired. At night, I sleep like a baby. Acid reflux also disappeared. Works for me… PS: No more sugar/carb cravings, not hungry 24/7 anymore and spending less at supermarkets, because of it. 🙂
