Have you ever gone on an inland wine-sojourn on a Sunday, only to find most estates closed? Very frustrating!
Groote Post Wine Estate, an 18th century establishment on the West Coast outside Darling, has now thankfully extended its hours.
You can now visit the restaurant, Hilda’s Kitchen, for relaxing Sunday lunch and purchase wine as well as indulge in a spot of winetasting on a Sunday morning.
Co-owner, Nick Pentz, says that there were many requests for Sunday activities. “Mom and dad can taste Groote Post’s prized, high quality wines and linger longer over a leisurely lunch at Hilda’s Kitchen, while the kids carouse on the jungle gym and frolic on the lush lawns.”
The restaurant is situated in an 18th-century manor house and is well-known for offering great food in the area. Groote Post is popular for winetasting, eating and enjoying the surrounding vegetation and wildlife – they also have a 2000-hectare game camp.
Eat Out Review 2007
The Groote Post farm, with its excellent wines, lies snugly in the Darling Hills, a little way up a good dirt road off the R27. The house is dated 1706 and it feels like stepping back many years as you enter the beautiful front door. Chef Debbie McLaughlin serves imaginative but down-to-earth cuisine using seasonal and regional specialities such as roast aubergine and tomato tart in a buttery pastry shell, homemade chicken pie, or perhaps lamb curry fragrant with spices or order a picnic basket and relax on the lawn. The wines of the estate are available at cellar prices, a great touch.
