Signature dish
Garganelli con funghi porcini, zafferano e whisky
Egg-based pasta (typical of Bologna) in a creamy porcini and saffron sauce, deglazed with whisky.
Pomodoro Ristorante, a popular neighbourhood in the Johannesburg suburb of Morningside, offers simple yummy Italian regional dishes – classics but with contemporary twists.
Although the restaurant is only 13 months old, the eatery is already immensely popular and has had numerous positive reviews and a Blazon from Chaîne des Rôtisseurs sits on their wall.
The Accademia della cucina Italiana had their quarterly dinner at Pomodoro in January and unanimously voted them the best Italian restaurant in Johannesburg and as having the best porcini risotto in South Africa. Impressive!
The owner, Stefano Mas, an Italian who grew up in Mexico, has recently devised a new menu along with chef Jeremia De Matteis (who joined them from Manolo in Cape Town), which focuses on three different regions: Puglia (mainly Bari), Tuscany (Florence) and Emilia Romagna (Bologna).
‘The main emphasis of the menu is in the simplicity and freshness of the dishes as well as the choice of the best local and imported ingredients’, says Stefano.
‘Our main goal is to provide Italian cuisine which has not yet been altered to suit South African tastes and therefore is as genuine as you get’.
The interior, designed by Marina, Stefano’s wife, is contemporary with clean white lines, and dashes of uplifting colours.
Superb!
