Spier Estate top of the wine pops

Spier recently received a whopping five Gold and one Great Gold medal at this years Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2010, which was held in Palermo, Italy.

The Stellenbosch wine estate earned a joint third place at the illustrious wine competition, which is pretty good going considering there were over 7 000 entries to contend with. Whats more, South African wine estates walked away with 25 out of the 604 Gold medals awarded, and two of the 60 Great Golds.

“We are delighted with the results and believe this is a great accolade for South African wines in general,” says Frans Smit, Spier’s cellarmaster. “SA ranked sixth overall this year – impressive given that we submitted only three per cent of the total samples.” Smit is especially proud to have been awarded a Great Gold for Spiers Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2008.

“We’ve placed a lot of emphasis on creating a distinctive, rich and complex wooded chenin blanc from vineyards aged between 38 to 42 years in age, he says. These vineyards produce grapes with thicker skins, enabling us to create wines with flavour intensity and great ageing potential.

Concours Mondial’s Great Gold accolade for our chenin shows that this varietal can be a top performer on the global stage.”
