The Sneaky Sausage: The House of Machines team opens new beer-hall restaurant

From the creative team behind The House of Machines and Outrage of Modesty comes a brand new addition to Shortmarket Street, The Sneaky Sausage: a modern take on the German beer hall complete with sausages, pretzels and beer.

It’s set to open today, Friday 14 October 2016, with a sausage-themed menu all about the brat, bock, knack, cheese and chorizo. There’ll be grilled options like a cheese griller and mustard, a bockwurst with sauerkraut, and a veggie/vegan sausage for non-meat eaters. All meaty sausages are sourced either from a family-owned European butcher or Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, and vegan options from Noble Ways Food.

As for the signature dish, operations manager Monique Tonsing explains, “The Sneaky speciality is our currywurst – a traditional German street food comprising a poached, then grilled, pork sausage cut into slices, and seasoned with curry ketchup on a bed of fries. We poach our Bratwurst in AND UNION Dark Lager before a sizzling crispy finish on the grill.”

When it comes to the sides, the Sneaky Sausage owners have eschewed the classic American bun and instead will offer other carb-rich offerings. The deep-fried ‘little bit on the side’ section features a selection of vegetarian treats, served with homemade ketchup and aioli; there’ll be sweet-potato fries, tempura veg, jalapeño popper wontons and risotto balls. There’s also a meat-and-cheese platter, a freshly baked pretzel and mustard, and a salad, for those wanting a little extra.

The beer-and-wine menu will cover a vast amount of refreshing options: All beers (tap and bottle) will be supplied by AND UNION alongside a curated wine list of the Western Cape’s top tipples, by bottle or glass, plus a barrel-aged house bourbon.

You’ll find the hidden entrance to The Sneaky Sausage within The House of Machines. Look out for the neon sausage lights that comes on when it opens on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm.
