Saxon Hotel relaunches Qunu in Joburg with three other dining spaces

The Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa announced the exciting reopening of its food and drinks offerings. This relaunch features the newly refurbished restaurant Qunu, alongside the Olive Bar, Piano Lounge, and Terrace.

George Cohen, Managing Director of Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, says:

“With 24 years of storied history, the Saxon Hotel celebrates its legacy while embracing the future of hospitality. With the support of the Steyn family and the guidance of interior designer and founder of Ommni Design, Nelson Kubheka, this transformation reflects our steadfast commitment to excellence. Nelson’s vision seamlessly integrates our rich heritage with contemporary luxury, ensuring each new space tells a story of sophistication and innovation. This evolution embodies our passion for delivering unparalleled hospitality, blending respect for our heritage with visionary design for the years ahead.”

Qunu restaurant has been reimagined to offer a journey that blends sophistication with innovation. Led by executive chef Matthew Foxon, the team has crafted a menu that honours South Africa’s rich food heritage while embracing contemporary influences. Each dish features locally sourced ingredients and South African flavours.

Guests can enjoy two-, three-, or four-course menus perfectly paired by sommeliers from the extensive, award-winning wine list. A six-course tasting menu is available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, offering a journey of Qunu favourites and new dishes.

Among the new dishes is an octopus creation, complemented by the rich, deep flavours of squid ink, crisp apple, and delicate dashi, finished with a touch of spicy kimchi. Another highlight is the Black Angus sirloin, paired with parsnip and polenta. For plant-based diners, a new beetroot dish enhanced with hazelnut butter is said to be a standout.

The redesigned Qunu features a variety of seating options, including chic banquette-style seats amidst tables dressed in white linen. The space is bathed in natural light, complemented by pendulum lights and clean design lines, creating a modern and inviting ambience. A striking new art installation symbolises human nature and the essence of togetherness, reflecting South Africa’s vibrant cultural mosaic.

Nestled just off the main Terrace is the newly unveiled Olive Bar where guests can choose from a range of signature cocktails, familiar mixes, and drinks crafted by skilled mixologists. The bar space has doubled in size, featuring a wraparound bar and intimate lounge nooks. Glass stacking doors lead to the Terrace, offering magnificent views of the warm African sunsets.

Overlooking the Terrace and infinity pool, the Piano Lounge promises a serene setting for guests to unwind and enjoy a light meal, hearty breakfast, or a decadent morning or afternoon tea. The thoughtful redesign features various seating styles to accommodate different preferences, ensuring comfort and relaxation. Stacking doors seamlessly integrate the outdoors, bringing a sense of openness and natural beauty into the Lounge.

The relaunch of these venues marks a new era for Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, combining its rich heritage with contemporary luxury. Guests are invited to experience the refined indulgence and service that define the Saxon’s commitment to excellence. Whether savouring a dish at Qunu, enjoying a handcrafted cocktail at the Olive Bar, or relaxing in the Piano Lounge, the Saxon promises a memorable experience.
