Richard Holmes takes a closer look at Twist Some More in Wellington, a family-friendly farm restaurant offering a blackboard menu of delicious comfort food.
Chef Johan van Schalkwyk has long had a following in the Winelands, and his bistro menu at Twist Some More certainly doesn’t disappoint. It’s wide-ranging, stretching from breakfast to dinner. The Twisted Florentine (you’ll have to try it yourself) is a must at brunch on weekends. Come lunchtime, the same could be said for the signature wild boar hamburger, made from the local porkers that feast on the surrounding vineyards. There’s even a banting-friendly variant, with a cauliflower and cheese ‘bun’. The beef and ale pie, made with Darling Brew, is another sure-fire option, but keep an eye on the chalkboards for special dishes that could include rabbit and fennel spring rolls, pasta with rich venison ragout, or bobotie wonton parcels. There’s limited choice for vegetarians, but then at least they’ll have room for the citrus crêpe brûlée for dessert. There’s also a separate kiddies’ menu with breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
There’s an interesting selection of local Wellington estates, including the excellent Nabygelegen and Bosman Wines, all at extremely reasonable prices.
Expect cosy and friendly service from the small team.
A cosy country space with screed floors and oak beams. When the weather’s fine, the tables laid out under the oaks are your best bet, especially if you want to keep an eye on your kids as they clamber on the jungle gym.
The Twist pantry is filled to the rafters with delicious things to take-away, from pestos and sauces to honey, olive oils and meats.

Twist is one of my favorite places to visit. All you city slicking foodies need to take a drive out to Wellies to experience this culinary Boland gem! On our last visit We booked an early lunch and arrived just after 12 and Chef Johan was sitting relaxed having his lunch.
The menu is not too overstated and fussy and remains the same with a few changes. For starters I tried the lavender quail, smoked tomato and olive salad. A beautifull delicate dish, the quail was prepared to perfection. Very generous portion for a starter.
For a main I tried the crispy pork belly. This is my latest favorite… A generous portion of crispy belly pork served on crispy Asian greens and stir fry noodles is the most amazing chilli ginger sauce. A winner!
We had the De Bos Walker Bay Sauvignon 2012, local of course!
