Savages consistently delivers high quality breakfast and lunchtime dishes to suit all palates. The breakfast menu has traditional options for those who prefer a smaller start to the day but for the adventurous the Turkish Eggs were a delight: creamy herb infused labneh topped with perfectly poached eggs, sautéed cherry tomatoes & olives and topped with hazel nuts, drizzled with chilled oil and chimichurri sauce. Every mouthful was fragrant and complex.
Optional extras include biltong which would be an interesting twist adding even more salty complexity. A winner of a dish.
The Spicy Benedict was a delicious twist on Eggs Benedict with the addition of crispy Chorizo which not only added spice and flavour but an interesting crunch to this stylish breakfast dish. Served on homemade seed bread this was a great start to the day.
The Breakfast Rosti was recommended by the waitress who claimed it was the house specialty. With two poached eggs and halloumi on a potato rosti topped with tzatziki, tomato relish and rocket it was an impressive looking breakfast. Even though the dish was deliciously flavoured the rosti was a “soggy bottom” experience which was disappointing. But perfectly poached eggs saved the day, and the meal was still enjoyable.
Even though breakfast isn’t traditionally followed by dessert it’s hard to pass up the incredible pastries and tarts on offer at Savages. After tasting the chef’s recommendations of a Chocolate Brownie, a Fig and Frangipane Tart and a Lemon Meringue it was unanimously agreed that the Fig and Frangipane Tart was a delight! Packed full of almond goodness it was a wonderful end to a very happy breakfast.
Savages is licensed but since it was a breakfast occasion the wines stayed in the cellar. Coffees were good even though the Americano was not hot enough and could have been stronger.
Overall the service at Savages is professional and polished but on this occasion our waitress was casual and possibly over familiar. At times service was slow which is frustrating when patrons have a full day of work ahead and time is tight.
The beautifully restored house is nestled in a tranquil garden with beautiful trees and a lovely fishpond. The sunny verandah is a perfect setting for a long lunch and the luscious purple couches making extracting yourself extremely hard. They invite lounging a little longer and just one more coffee.
