Review: Possum’s Bistro & Deli

Food:
Possums is the brainchild of jewellery designer and interior decorator Karen “Possum” Staples, a Kiwi who has made South Africa her home. There’s a small menu with the emphasis on fresh produce. Starters include a cold potato, cucumber, olive, caper and herb garden salad served with sweet picked white anchovies, as well as a creamy duck parfait served with fresh baguette and preserves. One of the signature dishes is the home-made beef patty with a hint of curry spices served with home-made onion marmalade and pommes frites. The prawn pasta has both Italian and Thai influences while the steamed black mussels in a fennel and orange broth is lip-smackingly good. Leave space for desserts – the rose-water ice cream is worth a visit all on its own.

Wine:
The restaurant is still waiting for its licence but will be selling some highly-rated boutique SA wines as well as some excellent Aussie and New Zealand offerings.

Service:
Fast, friendly and knowledgeable.

Ambience:
Colourful and gloriously cluttered. Serviceable brown paper and rose petals cover white linen tablecloths. Children and dogs are welcome, and there’s even the owner’s pooch in a basket as you enter this charming eatery.

And…:
There is a wide selection of deli items, seasonal fresh produce, good organic groceries and other delicious goodies to take home with you.
