Popular mall restaurant The Green Peppercorn fuses flavours from around the world, focusing on Africa and Asia via the Middle East.
Some of the daring combinations are more successful than others – even wraps and sandwiches don’t escape the experimental theme, with fillings such as prawn tempura with coconut mayo and sweet chilli jam.
Starters and side dishes are some of the tempting and moreish items on the menu. Order a starter sharing plate for the table with the likes of chilli-dusted squid with cardamom mayo; rooibos-smoked ostrich carpaccio maki style with mature parmesan, fresh rocket and toasted pine nuts; gorgonzola mousse with onion marmelade and beetroot chutney inside a bouche cup.
Roasted hog’s rib with coriander and fennel seed pork belly on the bone, topped with jackalas mango mojo served on butternut purée; apricot-masala baby chicken served with Cape Malay stuffing; and the fillet béarnaise are some of the most popular dishes.
For dessert, the Lindt bon bons with Amarula custard are simply heavenly.
The wine list is quite commercial and lacks imagination, but they do have a changing stand of boutique wines from which you can handpick your tipple.
The service here is generally friendly and very professional, but you can sometimes feel a bit judged on how many designer labels you’re wearing, this being Morningside Shopping Mall after all.
Unfortunately, the outlook is another shopping-centre car park, but it’s the kind of restaurant where ladies lunch and high-powered business meetings take place. Try to get a booth inside the restaurant for a more cosy feel.
The three-course set menus from R250 to R300 offer good value for money.
