Everybody loves a pizza, especially when it’s affordable, delicious and local. Eat Out critic Diane de Beer reviews Woodstock Urban Pizzeria, a restaurant with its mind firmly on the slices coming out of its wood-fired oven, and great music.

Food

Their stated aim is to create affordable yet quality pizzas in this neighbourhood. The roots of their pizzas are Italian and there are many familiar names like Siciliana, Regina, Margarita – all the staples, in fact. But then they also represent a local palate with selections like the Meat Lover (salami, ham and mince), the Jo-Burger (potato slices, asparagus and parsley) and the Woodstock with biltong, avo, roasted peppers and chilli-balsamic glaze, including the expected tomato base and mozzarella. Bases are thin and crisp, the fillings generous, the presentation on wooden boards sassy, and you can order different fillings on each half – always a bonus. They’re new in the game and will have to add shine to their sweet options, but they’ve hit the ground running.

Drinks

Woodstock Urban Pizzeria is still waiting its liquor licence, so for the moment it’s BYO. On the soft drink side, they’re experimenting with iced teas, cordials and anything their especially young clièntele might adopt.

Service

Staff and owners are young and quick to take instruction to get things running smoothly.

Ambience

The name suggests musical roots. One of the Kotze brother owners is also a muso, who’s known to kick off with a musical vibe on some nights. Much of the restaurant can be opened up during Pretoria’s beautiful summer nights, and even in chillier times when closed up, there’s an easy, laid-back feel. Graffiti-like drawings on the wall feature icons from Woodstock including Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin and Santana, with a contemporary urban style.

And…

The youthfulness of the owners translates to an energy, an adventurous approach and an ambience that suits the young yet embraces older generations as well.
