The food

With a long list of plant-based offerings, the menu sticks to wholesome basics such as smoothie bowls, hot breakfast options, light lunches and decadent (but healthy) sweet treats.

Notably, the blueberry smoothie bowl offers an explosion of flavour with every bite. The added avo creates a creamy consistency and the use of both dates and almond butter makes for a filling and fresh bowl.

Another dish that is a must-try is the vegan tofu scramble. It is no easy feat to properly season tofu, but the chef has mastered this art, creating a depth of flavour.

With a variety of light and filling dishes available, the quality of food paired with its affordable pricing offer real value to customers. Each dish is presented neatly and the portion sizes are really good.

Drinks

With a strong focus on offering plant-based and meat-free dishes, the café continues its theme of sustainable offerings even with its coffee.

A fresh cuppa from Kanela Café is made from coffee grown in the Democratic Republic of Congo, processed and roasted in Uganda. Coffee will set you back R26 to R35 for a cup and is worth every sip. Alternative milk options, including oat and almond, are available.

Tea-lovers will be overjoyed to know that the café offers an extensive list of teas, from the regular rooibos to the speciality ginseng oolong tea.

Service

The staff are very friendly, welcoming and informative. Waitresses and waiters are able to provide good recommendations on the menu. All staff members were wearing masks, the tables were sanitised prior to sitting down, and sanitiser was available at the lavatories as well.

Ambience

Located on the same property as The Greek Fisherman, Kanela Café forms part of a group of family-owned restaurants.

Offering ample seating outdoors in a dreamy courtyard setting centred around a large stone water fountain, the outdoor ambience puts one in a holiday mood instantly, and it is hard to imagine this spot is on a busy main road as the noise does not filter into the seating area.

The look and feel of the café are rooted within an earthy feel, something that is accented by the indoor seating decor.

Another notable feature of the café is that furry four-legged friends are welcome.
