Rumour had it that this was the place to go for an anytime meal, and that expectations should be high. This kind of anticipation is tough on the new kids on the block, because they’re sure to fail – but not this time! The Wolfpack in Sandton performs in every category, says Jodi-Ann Pearton.
It’s almost impossible to choose what to eat. The flavour profiles on this moreish menu are to die for; expect to salivate while reading the descriptions of each offering. The burgers are inspired by cuisine from around the globe, with Moroccan spices, teriyaki, harrissa and chimichurri making appearances – all bold ideas and very on trend. The staples are obviously there, but they’re not your average beef burgers.
The burgers are coated in tomato stock to keep them succulent and extremely flavoursome, are topped with local, seasonal ingredients, and placed in a snug homemade bun. The bunless burger menu is extremely innovative, including gems like the truck driver salad, a 200g cheddar-stuffed pure beef patty topped with more cheese and served with sautéed baby spinach, blanched broccoli, crispy pancetta, caramelised pears, feta dressing and sprouts. For the more adventurous, the specials menu has offerings along the lines of a peanut butter, cinnamon, caramelised banana and bacon burger, which tastes amazing. Don’t be afraid to step out the box a little!
Sides are fun and flirtatious. Broken down into fresh and fried categories, they’re all really good. Try the wasabi onion rings with wasabi mayo or the polenta fries.
The Wolfpack is the place to go for cocktails, craft beers and ciders (on tap and bottled). They have every craft beer you can imagine – and then some.
The cocktails are clever, creative and perfectly executed, but the wine list is somewhat limited, so wine connoisseurs should not expect too much.
Excellent service from start to finish. The waiters are just delightful and are perfectly suited to the establishment: fun, funky and happy individuals who clearly love their jobs. They know the menu and understand the nuances of the various dishes, being able to suggest dishes and meet guests’ requirements.
An eclectic mix of individuals meets in this little space in Sandton. You’ll see the fun family in the corner laughing together; the corporate meeting in the centre; the twenty- and thirty-somethings before they go out on the town; and the romantic couples dining in the corners. Pop music plays in the background, the restaurant buzzes, burgers fly through the pass and beer cruises around the room. It’s reminiscent of a New York hotspot and is just about perfect for anyone, anytime. Be sure to book.
The best part is the price, especially considering the size of the meal and the experience that you get. Definitely worth a visit.
