Situated on a private game estate in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind, Roots at Forum Homini is a destination restaurant of note. Chef Adriaan Maree specialises in precise, artful food at reasonable prices. Gourmet dishes are served with wine ‘teasers’ to complement each dish, and every plate delivers a delicate artwork, from smooth celeriac accompanying chopped beef tartare to the delicate masala sauce that beautifully matches a serving of Red Roman with crispy skin. This is a man who knows the art of balance, playing with light and perfect flavour combinations. A dish of ‘textures of duck’ was perfectly cooked with wild rice and a touch of bitter radicchio to offset the sweetness of the duck. Dessert includes treats like a delectable smoked honey ice cream, and just when you think the performance is over, coffee arrives with a gorgeous plate of sweet goodies.

Wine

A serious wine list offering a solid variety. The wines are expertly matched with the food, and at very reasonable prices, too.

Service

Attentive and elegant.

Ambience

The hotel – and restaurant – is an architectural masterpiece, set in a poetic landscape and boasting sweeping views. Eating here is an experience.
