Relaxed foodie gem in Dullstroom

Bryan Wolmarans and Stephen de Meyer are known foodies and hospitable restaurateurs in the Dullstroom area.

Their restaurant ‘Mrs Simpson’s’, situated off the main road in an older area of Dullstroom, is distinctly owner-operated as they guide the whole process from welcoming the guests and taking the orders to whipping up comforting contemporary dishes in the kitchen.

Mrs Simpson’s has been open for two years now, serving everything from great seafood dishes to well-matured steaks with chocolate chilli sauce.

The Moroccan prawns, mussels and shrimps (R75) looks enticing as does the Oven-roasted confit of duck with plum & berry sauce (R69). There are also lighter meals and salads, with the Butternut, biltong and feta salad being a firm favourite.

The quirky décor is a definite talking point for first time visitors and the restaurant takes its name after the late Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson.

As an ode to Wallis, there are old-style shoes on the walls, photos of Wallis and feather boas, furs and bags dot the room.

There is also an upstairs section with a fireplace, making it incredibly welcoming and homely, as well as a separate smoking section – the layout is great for functions.

If you’re looking for a great honest meal with a dollop of eccentricity, you know where to go when you’re next in the area.
