Quirky romance at Rabbit in the Moon

Janine Walker falls down the rabbit hole in Illovo to discover whimsy and romance at Rabbit in the Moon.

Food: There’s a small but appealing menu. Bruschetta comes with a variety of toppings, while the charcuterie board for two (R135) features generous portions of prosciutto, coppa, salami and spicy salami served with marinated aubergines and olives. There are the usual pastas and salads, as well as sliced rare fillet served with Parmesan and rocket and dressed with garlic and lemon. Also try the Scottish salmon topped with a crumbed sundried tomato crust and served with a side salad.

Wine: A small wine list complements the food. However, if you want to put big mark-ups on the wine then it has to be served correctly. Our Sauvignon Blanc was warm and we had to use ice-cubes to cool it down. Not good.

Service: Friendly but haphazard. It didn’t seem as if serving staff were allocated specific tables.

Ambience: Whimsical and fun with portraits of Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare in an eclectic and Bohemian setting. ?

And…? It is quirky, lush and romantic. In addition to the small restaurant, there’s a tented outdoor section, as well as a small enclosed garden that makes you forget that you’re bordering the ubiquitous Jozi car park.
